Mailfiles gets duplicated
Hello,
With my configuration Dovecot creates multiple duplicates (sometimes 2,
sometimes 3, sometimes a plenty) of mailfiles when moving them into the
Sent or the Trash folders. This does not affect the Inbox folder. I
observed this while using Thunderbird on Ubuntu as a client as well as
K9-Mail on Android, therefore I expect this comes from the Dovecot
server and not from the client itself. It also appears that t...

restoring mails and directories
...cify: I'm running dovecot 1.2.9 on a current ubuntu lts. It is set to Maildir and I backup the folder with the users maildata nightly via rsync.
now, when someone deletes a mail that they still need, and I copy it back from the backup, it will not be visible to mail clients. When I change the mailfile by a letter or so, it shows. that's easy enough, if not exactly awesome ;-)
But, if said person deletes a whole folder of mails, this way to make restored mails show up becomes rather unreasonable.
surely there is a better way to do this? I'd be glad for any and all hints! =)

Thanks. I worked around it with `file`.

MBOX to MAILDIR conversion
Thinking about going from mbox to maildir. Started with mbox way back
when but thinking about making the conversion. The main reason is that I
use rsync for backups and when these huge mailboxes are touched I have
to copy the whole thing. With maildir I only copy the files that change.
So - my questions is - what's the easiest way to make this happan. I
assume there are conversion

zlib plugin doesn't add "Z" flag to Maildir filename
I enabled zlib compression, so new mails are saved compressed.
Now I want to convert the old mails to gzip with the find and gzip
command, but now I don't know which files are already gzip compressed by
dovecot.
Shouldn't zlib_save itself add Z to the Maildir flags? As suggested in
the compress guide on http://wiki2.dovecot.org/Plugins/Zlib ?

webmaster in mqueue
Anybody finding a huge mailfile named webmaster in their mqueue? I'm
wondering what/how this gets there? Just found one on one server that
was over 2 gigs! Yuck!!!
So far, this has been on CentOS 3 machines using sendmail.

Error in IMAP command GETACL: Unknown command..
Hi all,
I have just installed dovecot on my Fedora Core 2 box. I would like to
use it only for reading archived email from within my Mozilla 1.7.3.
I syminked my old opera-files (*.mbs whoch seems to be same as mbox)
into ~/mail. Seems to work fine, mostly I can open the mailfiles -
sometimes it hangs with the following error:
The current command did not succeed. The mailserver responded:
Error in IMAP command GETACL: Unknown command..
And then:

Rsync speed over network.
...(manpage is good) but
I need to ask what will be the fstest possible way to copy over the data
from one machine to the other
I have setup two gigabit ethernet cards with a crosover cable and used a
private ip address range (10.0.0.1) between them so security is not an
issue.
I have about 80 000 mailfiles giving a total of about 50Gigs, obviousely
downtime has to be kept to a minnimum.

new user questions
...2 setup instructions and thought I'd
hit a snag with the first "send me a mail" snippet as it took several
minutes to arrive, so I assume that somehow procmail was involved in the
delivery and my procmail runs mail thought a whole bunch of checks before
finally handing it off to a mailfile as /var/mail/gene.
Then the next script seems to only try whats in my home dir, and of course
doesn't find it as neither exists, yet...
I assume that is because dovecot needs a kill -HUP. But I am not familiar
with that, so how is it done, and as what user, me, or root, on a ubuntu

Sieve's spamtest always returns 0
...sieve_spamtest_max_header = X-Spam-Status: [^,]*, score=[^[:space:]]+ required=(-?[[:digit:]]+\.[[:digit:]]).*
I tested those regular expressions with sed -r, e.g.
% sed -rne "s@^X-Spam-Status: [^,]*, score=-?[[:digit:]]+\.[[:digit:]] required=(-?[[:digit:]]+\.[[:digit:]]).*@\1 at p" mailfile
5.0
and they work.
Unfortunately, in sieve scripts, the spamtest value is always 0,
which is indicative of the spamtest "not having run", which in this
case I assume means that the regular expression didn't match.
Am I right in assuming that the matching happens at the time of

Cyrus mailbox (plain files) to Dovecot
Hi,
I'm migrating from a Cyrus to a Dovecot installation right now. As part of
it I've got plain Cyrus mailboxes (w/o real metadata; so to say I've got
the /var/spool/imap/user part but not the /var/lib/imap/user one)).
Those former mailboxes I want to provide under a public namespace via ACLs.
The question I cannot answer right now is:
How can I convert these plain mailboxes on a FS

deleteing e-Mail, quota and dovecot
Hi,
we run a RHEL4 E-Mail-Server with dovecot-0.99.11-2.EL4.1. we use mbox
and most users use imap. So I have set quota for the devices where the
user mailfiles are saved.
No I'm getting the situation, that users exide there quota but yet not
the grace limit and the user isn't able to delete messages.
e.g. the the soft limit is 100 MB, the hard limit is 110 MB. So there
should be some space to delete unneeded emails.
Am i thinking the wrong...

Hi to all. I'm making a samba PDC and I want that accounts and the mails
that every user have in Outlook Express will be saved on the server, so that
in every computer in the domain the user can have his mails... How to make
it? Probably it's not the correct place in which make the question but maybe
someone know the answer!

Homedir vs locations vs mail_location?
Hello,
I use Dovecot for rather long time, but I'm still in doubt for some
small things. Here they are:
1. The homedir value points to the place where everything for the user
stored at, while mail_location is something (some place) where mail
stored at. if I deal with pure virtual users (all users are in sql
tables and no system homes for them at all), should I ever care for

Debugging sieve-options
Hello all!
I am using a dovecot-server since several weeks - and am really
impressed about this server (after using courier and cyrus).
I tried to install the sieve-plugin now (CentOS RPM) and configured
sieve like described in your WIKI (and on several other pages).
Unfortunately I can not connect to port 2000 (sieve-administration?!)
nor are there any messages regarding sieve in the logs.

questions regarding zlib plugin
Hi,
faced with a current space problem on our dovecot 2.2.18 server, I
thought about using the zlib plugin.
My questions:
- is it really as simple as adding the options to the conf files as
described in the docs :) ? http://wiki2.dovecot.org/Plugins/Zlib
- As this just compresses new messages; dose anybody has a sort of
simple cron or whatever script or best practice how to compress existing

executing script on mail arrival from sieve

these mail, get maybe 1 or 2 or often none
but cron runs the script every 10 minutes, most times not needed as
nothing is retrieved
it's pretty crude - but works
getmail fetches mails to local folder, deletes in subfolder
munpack mailfile to unMIME

looking at wiki2, 'Pigeonhole Sieve Extprograms Plugin', is this what
would allow to execute my script on new mail arrival?
I can't quite figure out how to.. if anyone has any sample, I might try to
adapt to my need.. thanks (probably I should just l...
