Can't connect to samba from foreign network --- 'Gethostbyaddr failed' error in log.smb
...es, from lots of ip addresses on aaa.bbb. and ggg.hhh. I assume these are somehow associated with browsing, because these would definitely not be (human) clients trying to connect. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for any ideas. Frank R.Brown Frank.R.Brown@MailAndNews

wine on Mandrake 7.2
Hi, I managed to run United Devices client on Redhat 6.1 with wine-20010326 (after applying a patch that was posted here), but on Mandrake I get errors (below). It brings up the application, but sometimes gets stuck and doesn't open a System Tray window, as it does on the RedHat. (So once you "minimize" the app it's gone for good). Any help appreciated Zeev $

Samba on Solaris 2.5.1?
...amba running on Solaris 2.5.1. Basic symptom: I can get the daemon running, but can't connect to any shares, *and* can't use smbpasswd to 'add' new user id's (smbpasswd just hangs). Any advice? Has anyone ever had this working? Thanks. Frank R.Brown Frank.R.Brown@MailAndNews

Does mksmbpasswd.sh have any real purpose?
...mebody with root access must run smbpasswd for each user they want to activate. But can't I just do this anyway (with the -a 'add user' option), without ever having run mksmbpasswd.sh? Please clue me in if I'm missing something here. Thanks. Frank R.Brown Frank.R.Brown@MailAndNews

What to do in Windows 95 after configuring Samba
Hello, I'm new to Samba so sorry for this trivial question. I've configured my smb.conf with all the shares and enabled WINS support. I wanted to know what do I have to configure in my windows 95 machine. My LAN setup is - one Linux Red Hat 6.0 machine Pentium 166 and a windows 95 machine a 486. I've made my Linux m/c the proxy server using Squid. Also whenever I boot my Win m/c it

Buffer Overflows in WindowMaker/LibPropList
...indowMaker 0.60.0 has some sort of thing going that catches crashes but it may still be exploitable, you'll have to try it to see what I mean. Version 0.52 is definately exploitable. If you wanna get more details just start windowmaker from gdb and watch it go bye-bye. -Stan Bubrouski root@mailandnews.com ------------------------------------------------------------ Stan Bubrouski root@mailandnews.com ------------------------------------------------------------

Modified ARMA function
R-guRus , ARMA function in tseries, seems to be calculating the AR coeff 's as coef <- lm(xx[,1]~xx[,lag$ar+1])$coef [*snipped* from around line 77,] I'd like to modify this model with another term somewhat in these lines lm(xx[,1] ~xx[,lag$ar+1]+mvgsignal)$coef where mvgsignal is a moving average signal based on some indicators, the question is could i simply hack into

One of two samba servers not visible (remote announce
When the world was young, "Frank R. The only thing flaky in this setup are the various incarnations of windoze... See bel...

Use of solaris 2.5.1 precompiled as expedient
Would anyone have experience or a prediction about the feasibility of using the pre-compiled solaris 2.5.1 executable on a solaris 2.5.0 system? Thanks for any advice on how well this might work. Frank R.Brown Frank.R.Brown@MailAndNews

Does samba work with clearcase (unix vobs --> nt clients)?

Why a copy of smbd for each smbmount mountpoint?
When an OS/2 or Win9x client logs into a (Linux) Samba v2.0.6 server the running smbd spawns a copy of itself. That second instance of smbd then handles all the shares for that client machine. In contrast, a Linux client which does multiple smbmounts (also Samba v2.0.6) will cause the server to spawn a copy of smbd for *each* smbmount mountpoint. This has the potential for using up a lot more

Use windbind to keep same passwords between NT4 DOM and linux email?
Hello-- I'm working my way through setting up an email server for faculty and staff use at the school my wife teaches at, and while not a Linux whiz, am making good progress so far. The school has a NT 4 server which is used for domain authentication, and I am trying to grapple with whether I can achieve the "holly grail" of synchronized passwords between the email server on Linux

Samba, Clearcase, and multiple credentials
This falls under the 'getting clearcase to work with samba' category. Does anybody know if the clearcase albd server actually uses samba to access files (or anything else) on the unix side? I am having 'discussions' with rational (the clearcase people). The nt user running clearcase to access some unix-side views connects to the unix side using a set of credentials that have

"because you dance to disco and you don't like rock" [Win2000 vs Samba/Linux]
Hey, so i finally got it working thanks to your list (found the right place for EnablePlainTextPassword here, the existing 3-4 matches in the default registry don't seem to do a thing). It was all brilliant. I got connected to all my 4 samba servers. I was happy... 'til the next boot (you know, during installation of system, boots happen). Now it connects to 3 sambas (1 on FreeBSD, 1 on

pxe booting an iso image?
I've can boot floppy images (eg toms, barts) booting via pxe. I can also boot initrd's via pxe. Would be very cool to be able to boot iso's (knoppix, gentoo-basic) via pxe also. Looking thru the docs, looks like this would not be a straightforward thing. Would need to loop mount the iso, then loop mount the .img. Or else copy them all the pertinent files to the tftpboot
