Enabeling E-Mail Name
Dear readers,

little hack I want to share with you.

smbspool to Windows 2000 Server: "ERRgeneral opening remote file"
Hi,
I am trying to print from my Debian unstable Notebook to a printer
that is connected to a Windows 2000 Server. Target environment is CUPS
which uses smbspool as a front-end, and smbspool gives a strange error
message.
| export DEVICE_URI="smb://account:password@domain/server/printer"
| smbspool foo bar Title 1 ignore Makefile
gives the error message

How to have a directory and its subdirectories as a storage pool
Hi,
I would like to use btrfs subvolumes as storage place for VM images to
use snapshots.
Unfortunately, this does not seem to work in virt-manager at least
since the "filesystem directory" storage pool type does not allow me
to descend into subdirectories.
Is there a trick to do this? Can I do it with virsh, or in the XML?
Greetings

I would like to build it myself and gain some knowledge on the way.

scp with openssh on the server side and $PATH.
Hi!
When I try to use scp from or to a machine that runs openssh-1.2pre16
on Debian Linux, I keep getting the error message "scp: command not
found". Executing "ssh this-host echo \$PATH" yields
"/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:" which might be set in config.h.
sshd is installed to /usr/local/stow/openssh-1.2pre16/sbin, scp to
/usr/local/stow/openssh-1.2pre16/bin;

How to use /dev/mapper in virt-manager/libvirt
Hi,
my test host is running Debian/GNU Linux unstable and has virt-manger
0.9.5 and libvirt 1.2.1. I am using encryption and thus have devices
in /dev/mapper that are not LVs, for example called
/dev/mapper/myvirtualdisk.
I'd like to configure libvirt in a way that allows me to directly
assign such devices to a VM. This does not work when I create a
filesystem directory storage pool in

Simple Samba server for "at home" - what do I need and what not?
Hello,
after two decades without a dedicated file server at home, it is about
time to have Samba.
While I am mainly a Linux guy there is a couple of systems that don't
find rsync and sshfd adequate. We do have a handfull of standalone
Windows 10 machines, a bunch of smartphones and a zoo of home
entertainment appliances such as a TV, Sat receivers, IP radios/audio
players. In addition to

macvtap and tagged VLANs to the VM
Hi,
I would like to run a network firewall as a VM on a KVM host. There are
~ 25 VLANs delivered to the KVM host on three dedicated links, no LACP
or other things. I have the VLANs 100-180 on the host's enp1s0, the VLANs
200-280 on the host's enp2s0 and the VLANs 300-380 on the host's enp3s0.
To save myself from configuring all VLANs on the KVM host, I'd like to
hand the entire

[smbfs] Timing problems with kernel 2.2.x?
[Note: This has been posted to linux-kernel and was ignored. Since
smbfs is maintained by the samba team, I am retrying here]
Hi!
To maintain and install packages from CD-ROM to my Debian/GNU Linux
system, I use Debian's apt package. Since my Linux box is stowed away
in a closet, I use an smbfs mount to mount the CD-ROM drive from my
Windows desktop machine to the Linux box.
This used to

http://wiki.dovecot.org/VirtualhostingWithExim
Hi,
Here is a new wording for the "Exim4 on Debian" part of the web page
on http://wiki.dovecot.org/VirtualhostingWithExim. It's immutable, so
I cannot directly change it.
I e-mailed Florian, but he cannot log in to the wiki any more. Can
somebody with appropriate privileges change the page?

Allow plaintext auth from local network?
Hi,
I have dovecot 1.0rc15 on Debian and would like to allow plaintext
auth not only from the local IP address but from the entire local
network, but not from everywhere. Is that configurable?
I am looking for something like "allow_plaintext_auth = 10.8.0.0/24".
Greetings

problems logging in from 1.2.2 client to 1.2.1pre24 server
Hi!
On my personal workstation, I have installed openssh 1.2.2. I have two
server machines, one (A) running a self-compiled openssh 1.2.1pre24,
and a different one (B) running an openssh1.2.1pre24 compiled by
someone else.
While I can perfectly log in to A, logging in to B fails:

different servers on different ports
Hi,
I have the following unusual setup:
F is a firewall host. Its external Interface has IP 172.16.20.4, and
the internal Interface ist 192.168.215.1.
A and B are internal hosts with IPs 192.168.215.31 and 192.168.215.71.
F's port 10022 is transparently forwarded to A's port 22;
F's port 20022 is transparently forwarded to B's port 22.
So, connecting to 172.16.20.4:10022 gives

[Feature Suggestion] ~/.ssh/config pre-connect hook
Hi,
in port knocking setups, it would be great to have the possibility to
execute a shell command before the ssh connection is actually
initiated. That way, one could configure ssh like
host foo
hostname foo.bar.example
user baz
pre-connect knock foo.bar.example 1234 5678
and transparently initiate the connection by saying ssh foo. ssh would
then first invoke the knock process and then initiate
