doveadm doesn't seem to honor mail_location, mail_uid, mail_gid
I am adjusting the recommended ldap configuration to match active
directory instead of the standard posixaccount layout. The problem is
that doveadm seems to ignore mail_uid and mail_gid along with (possibly)
mail_location.
This is a setup with all virtual users (all ldap, not system accounts).
Everything works in postfix and standard dovecot operation, it is only
doveadm which doesn't work.
Ldap queries return everything but these entries (as they do not exist
in AD). These...

mail_uid and mail_gid are not set in environment (for expire-tool and so)
...vmail
mail_guid = vmail
which is confirmed with 'dovecot -n'
I have a script my-expire-tool-test containing:
#!/bin/sh

which basically only display environment variables.
When I run :
/usr/sbin/dovecot --exec-mail ext my-expire-tool-test
I do not see any variable MAIL_UID nor MAIL_GID. As a consquence, when I run
/usr/sbin/dovecot --exec-mail ext my-expire-tool
with my-expire-tool containing:
#!/bin/sh
# This script is a workaround for Dovecot 1.2 having issue to load modules
when running expire-tool.

file system permissions
I am using Maildir and virtual domains.
I have the following definitions in the dovecot.conf:
mail_uid = 10000
mail_gid = 10000
mail_location = maildir:/var/mail/apps/%d/%n/Maildir
...
Userdb database is LDAP based. Some users in LDAP might have a uid/gid
defined. If thats the case, I want dovecot to use those uid/gid. If
the user in LDAP does not have a uid/gid attribute, it'll fall back to
using mail_uid/mail...

Problem with mail_uid
Hello!
I have problems fetching mail for a system user. In use is a passwd-file.
If I set (for virtual users)

A previous user had a similar problem in 2015:
https://dovecot.org/list/dovecot/2015-July/101469.html
He was advised to look at https://wiki2.dovecot.org/UserIds ? without being
given more specific advice. I looked at the page. I tried adding mail_uid
and mail_gid. No luck.
In my case, I see:
# sudo -u dovecot groups
dovecot vmail
# sudo -u dovecot cat /var/mail/vhosts/travler.net/shadow
<file contents>
I have a vmail user:

Dovecot Maildir ownership/permission problem
...ve an error saying the Maildir is inaccessible and shows
that is a permission problem. I changed the chmod to 777 and Dovecot worked
(temporarily solution). And, it created additional items under that folder
under a "mailman" user (which I specified in the configuration using
mail_uid and mail_gid) - Note: it does not work if I do not set these
"mail_uid" and "mail_gid" settings.
I think what I would like is to make Dovecot access each individual's
mailbox using the user's own account and group. How do I do this? I am using
Passwd-file scheme.

to account/group postman. /var/mail/ is empty and owned by root:mail
so I've also set mail_privileged_group = mail. I was under the

sievec drops privileges unexpectedly
...apparently sievec drops privileges to the virtual-mail user. Why does this
happen? It seems kind of counter-productive - I don't see a way to properly run
sievec as root now? How is this supposed to work?
Now I wrote this, I realized that it might be related that I have
specified mail_uid and mail_gid globally in my dovecot.conf file.
Perhaps those are intended to only be put inside the protocol imap and
protocol lda blocks? This would mean duplicating of this bit of
configuration, which doesn't really sound nice.

misconception in uid and gid
...FROM virtual_users AS V LEFT JOIN virtual_domains AS D ON V.domain_id=D.id WHERE V.user='%n' AND D.name='%d'
Nevertheless, if I remove the segments "'vmail' AS uid, 'vmail' AS gid" and modify the file conf.d/10-mail.conf to show
mail_uid = vmail
mail_gid = vmail
I get this error:
dovecot: auth: Error: userdb(<mail>): client doesn't have lookup permissions for this user: userdb reply doesn't contain uid (change userdb socket permissions)
Does anybody know what is wrong in my set-up?

sql : uid, gid, home ignored ?
...Error: user theuser: Couldn't drop privileges: User is missing UID (see mail_uid setting)
dovecot: imap(theuser): Error: Internal error occurred. Refer to server log for more information.
The same two lines are also displayed in mail.info and mail.log
Further testing (setting mail_uid & mail_gid to a nobody) shown that the home setting was ignored too.
The sql example says that uid and gid are supposed to be an override of the mail_uid and mail_gid settings.
Any idea of why the columns are ignored ?
Thanks in advance,
Eric
