Characters and Numeric Values in One Matrix
...ective columns. Unfortunately, I am just starting using R and I could not help him. Is there an easy and straightforward way to do this in R? Maybe a little example facilitates understanding our problem: names <- c("Marge", "Lisa", "Homer", "Bart", "Maggie") ages <- c(38,10,41,8,1) Now he wants to have 2 columns in a matrix which should look like this: "Marge" 38 "Lisa" 10 "Homer" 41 "Bart" 8 "Maggie" 1 I thought about using either: family1 <- matrix(c(names, ages),...

boxplot with grouped variables

(package e1071) SVM tune for best parameters: why they are different everytime i run?
...4.00 run A again: cost gamma 1 4 again: cost gamma 0.25 4.00 The result is so unstable, if it varies so much, why do we need to tune? Do you know if this behavior is normal? Can we trust the best.parameters for prediction? Thank you so much to help out!! Best Regards, Maggie [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

Stretch the x-axis for better alignment comparison
I have the following code that aligns the two graphs. Problem is that in .pdf it gives me it x-axis (0-100) is broken down into 0-20, 20-40..and so on. I wonder if there is for it to display the x-axis (and y-axis) in more detail than that. I'd appreciate your input -- pdf(file="VECTOR & ICA ALIGNMENT.pdf", height=5, width=5)

Capistrano setup fails
I can''t get past the setup step in Capistrano. I know the paths are correct and I''m using zsh locally (bash on remote), so the shell shouldn''t be a problem. It never asks for the SSH password, even. Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Kenneth -- => the blog from beyond <= => www.eyeheartzombies.com <=

how to melt variable to one variable
I want to make a stacked bar plot with one bar for two variables from my data "chir", the two variables have about 100 values like no, yes and na. I want to show how many no, yes and na they both have together with the stacked bar. I tried to melt these to variables first like this: melt1=melt(data_chir, measure.vars=c("N1_re", "N2_re"), var="zpd") but it

A nicer HTML index page for llvm-cov
I've been working on adding code coverage support to my ELLCC project (http://ellcc.org) and I thought it would be nice to fun the index page of the HTML output of llvm-cov into something a little prettier and more useful. The initial result is here: http://ellcc.org/coverage/ If there is any interest, I'll submit the llvm-cov changes. -Rich

Linear Mixed Model set-up
Hello, I have some data covering contaminant concentrations in fish over a time period of ~35 years. Each year, multiple samples of fish were taken (with varying sample sizes each year). Ultimately, I want an estimation of the variance between years, and the variance within years + random effects. I used a linear mixed model to estimate these variances, but after reading a number of different
