OK, I finally figured out putting mfc42.dll into the system32 directory. I obtained the file at dll-files.com. However, I still get the same error message. Guys, you need to help me on this one.

hello, i'm new in this forum and i'm from germany. i'm using ubuntu 10.04 and wine 1.1.42. a few days ago i tried to install mafia via wine but it didn't work. i double clicked on MafiaSetup.exe and nothing happend. when i tried to start the exe via terminal (wine /..../mafiasetup.exe) there where no error messages and nothing happend. so what can i do to make the installation work?

So I downloaded Wine (prebuilt binary for Mac OS X) on my Windows desktop and moved it via flash drive to my Mac OS X laptop (Intel). I ran the Wine installer on the laptop and boom it was complete. Then I inserted the Mafia CD into the slot and tried running the setup.exe file. After getting an error message, I tried four more times and no success. I get the same error messages.
