Contributing to the Wiki for Mactel and desktop
...I have also spent
some time configuring desktops.
I went through some of the pain and I would have been happy to share
it with other through the wiki.
Especially:
- I configured a fairly recent MacBook Pro with CentOS v5.4 x86_64 and
thought that I may update the page
http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Mactel or add a new page for MacBook Pro
under the Mac section of the HowTos
(http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos#head-3fc1dfba2d7640eed716835988804b22da13c5ff)
- I also configured successfully Adobe Flash 64bit and Skype (not very
difficult: just download and it works, but still it could be good to
show that t...

mactel and oracle, when?
Having searched the net, I see that oracle is not supported by rails on a mac osx Intel.
Now this may be due to the fact that Oracle is being slow to supply intel based binaries
of their drivers, but I find it odd that osx is so well supported, yet this gaping hole
exists.
I did find an ODBC driver for osx/intel that works to oracle, but of course there is no
ODBC driver for Rails that will talk

[LLVMdev] llvm-gcc frontend 4 on intel darwin produces intel assembler
...t in llvm representatino but in ia32?!
also the target says:
Target: i686-apple-darwin8

is is stupid since gcc 3.4 is not precompiled on mactel - is it compilable?
thanks in advance?

rmagick->X11 on MacTel Howto?
I needed to install rmagick/GraphicsMagick on an IntelMac and did so
from Darwinports. Some things work and others don''t work, like
rendering fonts which needs X11 fonts and X server. The rmagick page
at rubyforge points to ..
http://developer.apple.com/opensource/tools/runningx11.html
where X11 link to Apple is broken.
X11User.pkg talked about on the page above no longer exists at

How-To: Intel Mac Mini
I would like to do a How-To on installing CentOS 5 as the "only" OS on an
new intel mac mini.
The Machine:
1.83 Ghz Core 2 Duo
4 Gig Ram
320 Gig Hard Drive
DVD/CDRW
Intel 950
Apple USB Keyboard
Apple Bluetooth Mighty Mouse.
20" Apple Cinema Display (DVI)
Complete apple system.
Why?
I prefer running Linux on Apple Hardware. I would like to help people save
time that want to

Centos Macbook Installations
Hi
I would like to contribute to the CentOS wiki.
I've created the user RobertoNebot for accessing the centos wiki.
I would like to contribute with CentOS installation instructions for
Macbooks.
I think that the right place for this contribution would be
https://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Laptops
Cheers,
Roberto Nebot.

Success! Xen 3.0.4 on MacBook Pro with Gentoo dom0 and ArchLinux domU
...karound is to hot-plug an
external USB keyboard and use it to choose other boot profiles.
Also, the current Xen release in Gentoo portage is 3.0.2. I could not
get this to work. I used the marineam-xem overlay which uses Xen
3.0.4 along with a modified 2.6.16.46 kernel source. There are no
mactel-linux [3] patches for this kernel release so I haven''t tried
to run X and use the touchpad or other laptop-specific components
that are patched.
I then followed the directions given here [4] to build a working dom0
kernel. Again, the directions were hazy/ambiguous in places so I hav...

Can you test and start editing the page with relevant informations ?
Was wondering if that wouldn't be a good time to review the following
page (as there will be some "common" section shared between the two
pages) :
https://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Mactel
What do you think ?
Thanks a lot for your contribution to the wiki :-)

isohybrid has 2 variants
...mmand that would allow to boot on a Mac.
Could you provide such an example in the description of isohybrid?
Of course I'm a bit opportunist here as I'd like that our installers can boot
on a Mac without using rEFInd (I assume that I can use Matthew Garret's
hfs-bless as does Fedora in mactel-boot)...
So at least for me a command that would produce an image as versatile as
possible would e useful.

that oci8 might be a issue.

wxruby2 alpha release goals
...attr, get_attr and is_attr to more ruby-ish attr=(), attr() and
attr?(). We can put in better plumbing later ;)
E) This is one where we can use help. Suggest we release as source
tarball and gems. I''m happy to bundle binaries into platform gems.
OS X: Alex. Sean are you able to check on Mactel?
Win32: Roy? Curt? anyone?
Linux: Kevin? anyone?
Hope this sounds like a reasonable way forward - but please disagree.
And shout if your manager has just offered you two months off your
normal job to workk on wxruby ;)
cheers

Why Macs instead of AMD or Intel ? Just curious
My first computer was a Mac (SE30) but it was also my last so I am not
without appreciation of Apples wonderful aptitude for design. Without
starting a flame-fest why do so many ruby and rails developers use a Mac ?
It seems to be a commonality within the ruby and RoR community. Especially
laptops. The first ruby users group meeting I attended was about 50% Macs
(or so it seemed to me - I

same in its branded Power solutions (among others).
So it's not going to solve vendors who require firmware and
data organization that is not open and stanardized. We're
fine on legacy Win32 platforms, but it's not going to address
Mactel, nor solve the problem of existing OSes that don't run
under current virtualization solutions because of such
proprietary requirements.

Might be buying a Mac
I might be buying a Mac tomorrow. I checked out the new 13.3in MacBook at the new Apple Store on 5th ave in NYC. I''m torn between the smaller MacBook and the MacBook Pro. We have a pro at work and I''m not that thrilled with the way it feels. I like the keyboard much better on the 13inch. However, I think doing development on that small of a screen could get frustrating. Any
