using rsync with Mac OS X
Rsync looks like a good tool for keeping files synchronized between two
computers, such as a desktop and laptop. However, Mac OS uses a forked
file system, with the second fork storing data critical to some files
(such as applications) as well as type and creator information matching
files up with the appropriate apps and file types.
Mac OS X comes with a command-line utility called ditto

MacOS X: update.packages(type="mac.binary") fails (PR#7836)
...l.packages(). install.binaries() is a function defined
utils/R/aqua/GUI.R.
2. I also had to remove argument 'dependencies' since that is not
defined in install.binaries() of utils/aqua.
It seems that install.binaries of utils/aqua is mentioned in several
places in R sources, but .install.macbinary() appears only in one place,
so changing install.packages() is less hassle than changing
utils/R/aqua/GUI.R and all other places (although this looks more
natural).
This still requires a fix in passing type in update.packages() that B.
Ripley already did for R 2.1.1, or setting

MacOS X: update.packages(type="mac.binary") fails (PR#7834)
Dear Mr Moderator, please let me through. I want to reply to my own
thread. I once subscribed to this list, but then my subscription was not
accepted.
Now to the business:
The final failure came from missing .install.macbinary() function. I
grepped R-patched sourcesand the only instance of .install.macbinary()
was the call to the function in R-
patched/src/library/utils/R/packages2.R (stupid automatic linefeed in
mail composer: just parse it). There was no definition of the function,
so I don't know from where should...

MacOS X: update.packages(type="mac.binary") fails (PR#7831)
...t install.packages uses the value of getOption("pkgType")
which seems to be "source" in CRAN binary of MacOS X (contrary to documentation
at ?options).
2. If this is corrected, or first set options(pkgType="mac.binary"), the update
fails for missing function .install.macbinary().
The first problem is easy to correct:

Is there anyway to either point R in the right direction for the
packages or have R install the correct version of the packages.
Much appreciated,

Feature request: Sync Mac OS resource forks and metadata on Mac OS X
I have a feature request for rsync. I tried posting it to the
FAQ-o-matic, but that system didn't seem to be accepting new
questions. I hope this is an okay list for the request--apologies if
it's misdirected.
Mac OS X provides support for the Mac file system resource forks and
mac specific metadata (e.g., creator and file type). Most Unix
applications ignore this information, but it

problem installing packages with compiled-from-source R.app on Mac OS X - Tiger

And the R console says:
"Error in install.packages(c("dyn"), lib = "/Library/Frameworks/

I see that this has been encountered before and resolved (at least
Prof. Ripley saw what was wrong) as per the following thread:
https://stat.ethz.ch/pipermail/r-devel/2005-May/033115.html
But I am not sure what needs to be done on my part so that I am not
affected from it.

...g zlib?
In the manual, it says to download zlib with Fink. I've got fink and the findcommander (GUI fink),
but zlib isn't in the list of packages (all the other ones like openssl i've installed thru fink). can
someone help me download it using the command line?
or if someone has a macbinary to share, i would greatly appreciate it.
thanks!

Updated Mac support
I have a zip file containing updated Macintosh support for Vorbis on
my company's web site at the following URL:
http://bDistributed.com/projects/vorbis-mac/MacVorbisUpdatesBeta3.zip
I used Metrowerks ClassWrangler to build the file because StuffIt
insisted on MacBinary-encoding the project files. StuffIt Expander
seems to have issues with expanding it, so I'm not sure if it's OK or
not. For the other Mac developers I put a StuffIt 5 archive at
http://bDistributed.com/projects/vorbis-mac/MacVorbisUpdatesBeta3.sit
I also sent the Zip file to Monty...

HFS+ resource forks: WIP patch included
As you all know, rsync doesn't have any special handling
for Mac OS X HFS+ resource forks. Kevin Boyd made RsyncX
and rsync_hfs, to address this gap, but they only work when
the destination filesystem is also HFS+. I haven't been
able to find any references to an rsync that is capable of
syncing from HFS+ to UFS (etc). The only solutions I've
seen involve lots of preprocessing
