This image also boots with no problems on the GA-M55Plus-S3G. Just another data point. >The board first appeared mid 2006, it is even AM2 and not AM2+. Yes. To my shame, I admit that this is a fairly old board. I hope that non of you guys will hate me for not confessing this sooner, and I hope that you won't be mad at me for asking for help r...

USB boot problems on Gigabyte GA-M55Plus-S3G
...you post the results of 'fdisk -l -c=dos -u=cylinders >/dev/sda' and 'fdisk -l -u=sectors /dev/sda' Huh? I get the feeling that you are making the assumption that I have some flavor of Linux all set up and ready to run on this specific box (i.e. the one containg the Gigabyte GA-M55Plus-S3G motherboard). I don't, actually. But I may have, in future. Would that help in some way? Also, on the off chance that I might be in a position to fulfull your request for the above specific info sometime in the near future, could you please elaborate and let me know if, by "/dev/sd...

...t;things will eventually happen. OK. Are you saying that this critical matchup was NOT present in or on the originals Clonezilla, UBCD, and OpenELEC USB sticks that I had in my possession before I started this whole thread? You know, the ones that booted find on other machines (but not on the GA-M55Plus-S3G) ? >Generally speaking, the BIOS itself has to support (understand) the >values that are being used in the MBR. Yes. But what exactly did we determine that GA-M55Plus-S3G is failing to support? >With the adequate values, the MBR and the VBR still need to contain >the correct &q...

The official ISOs are hybrid images. They also contain a partition table...

USB boot problems on Gigabyte GA-M55Plus-S3G
Hi, > > debian-7.3.0-i386-netinst.iso > This image also boots with no problems on the GA-M55Plus-S3G. So isohybrid boots with and without additional GPT. It boots with partition start 0 and with partition start at 32 kB. Everything points to FAT or the individual USB stick. Can you confirm that the same USB stick works with isohybrid and fails with the hard-disk-style setups ? > Yes....

After USB boot problems on Gigabyte GA-M55Plus-S3G
...uot; for booting a bootable thing from a USB stick. How do I know? Because I had to get _some_ version of Linux running on the box in order to obtain the four command results you requested. And how did I do that? By putting ArchLinux(Live) onto one of my other USB sticks and then booting the GA-M55Plus-S3G from that stick. Regards, rfg P.S. I just now found the message you left for me in that FTP directory. Thank you for your kind invitation, but I do not do IRC.

You know, the ones that > booted find on other machines (but not on the GA-M55Plus-S3G) ? We have no specific information about those USB drives (not even an "fdisk -l" and similar commands), and we don't know exactly which BIOS settings were used in each test. We also don't know how exactly you wrote those USB drives with the specific tools (UBCD, etc.)....

This stick *does* show up in the Boot Priority list on the GA-M55Plus-S3G, and ... wait for it... it *does* boot up to the Archlinux start screen! Yipee! *Something* actually works! OK, so now what? Now that I know that this motherboard isn't totally hopeless, I'm a bit more willing to try to provide more help to you guys, as you work to iron out whatever...

...9;t bother to check the checksums. Anyway, I did fetch the file, unzipped it, and then dd'd "test.img" to _both_ my 4GB Transcend _and_ also to my 8GB Patriot. (I used bs=1m. I assume that's OK.) You will be happy to know that your test image _does_ appear to boot OK on my GA-M55Plus-S3G, from either/both of my test sticks (4GB & 8GB). Whatever magic you did, it seems to have worked. (Please _don't_ go into too much technical detail, but... in layman's terms... what did you do?) Here is what I got after booting from the 8GB Patriot: SYSLINUX 6.03 EDD 6.03-pr...

Does this happen with isohybrid ISO images too ?
