The documentation on the samba wiki ( https://wiki.samba.org/index.php/Configuring_clustered_Samba#Lustre_filesystem) states that the setting is necessary to prevent possible corruption, but states the last tested version was on the 1.4.x and 1.5.x versions of lustre.
