Posting here in the hope that some one may have encountered problems with recovery from backups on LTO4 media and found a solution. Back ups on FujiFilm LTO4 media (800/1600). Archives created using tar -cf /dev/nst0. ?The tapes were fine when the archives were created (tested by extracting random sample files from them) but something went wrong in storage (no physical damage). Now a few LTO4 tape...

...A drives? Is it possible to use Amanda or Bacula to archive to a drive, and maintain a archive regimen? Archive to the drive, when the drive is full put it in an anti-static bag, and place it in storage. Possibly archive to a mirrored pair if one is really concerned. We are considering using LTO4 as an archive medium. With the tape densities these days, it appears the tapes are rather fragile, and that head gap seems awful small. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated. Again, I'm sorry for the OT, but I figured I'd get knowledgeable responses from this list instead of sales pitch...

Hello all. I have 15 or so CentOS servers (now v4.4, I will upgrade them all to 5 when it comes out) and a few windows machines. I am looking to implement a network backup solution using Amanda. I will be backing up 200 gig or so to start, but that will grow. Does anyone have any recommendations on tape drives that will work "out of the box" with CentOS? Thanks, Joe
