I turned up the debugging level, and I saw nothing suspicious (errors and the like). However, the last thing that happened before the final LSA_CLOSE requests was an LSA_ENUMTRUSTDOM which responded with NT_STATUS_NO_MORE_ENTRIES. I'm not sure if that's normal or not, but that seems to be the point where Windows stops trying to lookup the user.
