OT: systemd Poll - So Long, and Thanks for All the fish.
...companies have been in my experience the bread and butter for obtaining server-quality hardware. The typical donation will be at least one or two generations old before the non-profit gets it; my current employer is just putting in production some IBM BladeCenters with the dual-socket Opteron LS20 blades (10+ years old). Given the spiky workload, these blades are suitable for the targeted use, and the electrical requirements aren't a problem (I've done the math; it would take ten years or more to justify the purchase price of a new blade based on power savings alone, and our pow...

Debugging a XenU that goes to Zombie state
...Sat Jul 1 13:54:07 EDT 2006 Note: YUM updates for July 17 and 18''th were after this reboot, which is why I''m fairly sure the problem isn''t with the kernel. Then a reboot after a Zombie: Jul 23 09:07:55 calcutta kernel: Linux version 2.6.17-1.2157_FC5xenU (brewbuilder@ls20-bc2-14.build.redhat.com) (gcc version 4.1.1 20060525 (Red Hat 4.1.1-1)) #1 SMP Wed Jul 12 00:46:43 EDT 2006 I then did a yum update ''just in case'' something had been fixed. And another reboot this morning: Jul 24 09:28:07 calcutta kernel: Linux version 2.6.17-1.2157_FC5xenU (...

Errors compiling wine under Red Hat
...and I'm limited to installing on my shared (AFS) space. In any case, I'd probably want it to run from my user space anyways, so that its accessible from all boxes on the network. Virtualization
...I use KVM for many things, but I have older hardware in quantity on which I'll likely run Xen4CentOS with paravirtualized guests, since the processors in these blades do not have hardware virtualization extensions (early Opteron, but still very serviceable for what we want to do). Too many LS20 blades (about 200) to upgrade them all right now without either donations or other funding (but if anyone wanted to donate some IBM BladeServer HS21's or newer I would not turn down the donation, and we are a 501(c)(3)...... :-) ).

xend not working anymore and problems on x64-64
Anybody else having the problem that xend does not start? I updated 3 systems (2 ia32, 1 x86-64) today (30th) and none of them has xend running anymore. No output to /var/log/xend-debug.log or xend.log. Also my 64bit blade (LS20) has since recently had hang-up problems. Typically it dies while compiling the sources after several minutes. The login prompt then still accepts the username, but the prompt for the password does not appear anymore. If ''top'' is running in 3 second update mode, these 3 second...

...to take the second path, don?t cry about how much change there is to choke down when you?re finally forced to move forward. You choose to put off dealing with it for many years; the chickens have come back home to roost, so there will of course be a lot of work to do. > ...dual-socket Opteron LS20 blades (10+ years old)...CentOS 7, once installed, works great... That doesn?t really contradict my point. First, I said ?most? hardware, but you?ve gone and cherry-picked uncommonly durable hardware here; you?re probably out in +3 sigma territory. A lot of commodity PC-grade SOHO ?server? hardw...

SCSI drives and Centos 7
Everyone, about 4 years ago, I tried to install CentOS 6 on a Supermicro server with SCSI drives using a LSI raid system. I could never figure out or find a way to make the installation disc of Centos 6 identify the SCSI drives. The installation disc for Centos 5 identified the SCSI drives without a problem. I finally gave up on Centos 6 and installed Centos 5 and the system has worked very
