...9;d give this a go at the weekend. The printers are TCP/IP on Axis print servers. I've set them up in UnixWare as type 'other' and routing through to the correct IP address. A SCO person told me to do the following lpadmin -p <printer-name> -I "pcl raw" lpshut lpsched He then said to run 'lpadmin -p -l | pg' to check the filter is available, but I don't know what this is supposed to do - I get an error saying "The names "any" "all" and "non" are reserved". In smb.conf I have [global] printing = lp...

SysV interface script
...: #!/bin/sh # # This interface script drives a PC-attached printer via the SAMBA utility. # # This script is a gross simplification of the "official" SysV interface # script, whilst attempting to achieve much of the same functionality. # # Note the almost fanatical redirection of output; lpsched treats any # output from this script as a problem with the request, and kills it, # exit codes notwithstanding.... # # In a previous life, it was distributed with the SAMBA software, but # has since been hacked to the point of non-recognition. # # Dave Horsfall, FGH. # # clear out the unwanted par...

LP print service stalls
Hi All, When our server receives simultaneous print jobs from 2 or more clients, the print service stalls and I have to manually restart it (lpsched). I am running Samba 2.0.4b under Solaris 2.5.1 on a SPARC 20 and I'm using system V printing. The printers are connected to the ethernet using HP Jetdirect cards and administered by jetadmin on the Sun box. Any ideas on how I could troubleshoot this? Thanks in advance. Here is the relevant...

Print jobs merging?
I have a problem going on here, that I hope someone out there may be able to help solve. We run SAMBA 1.16p11 under Solaris 2.5 to serve about 60 Win95 clients. Thirty of these clients are printing to three HP laserjet printers, each printer with a JetDirect card which uses lpsched on the Solaris server as their print spooler. These spools have been defined as BSD-type devices under sysv's lpsystem command, and they print perfectly, with one small exception. My problem is this.... we have print jobs which are generated from an external source, and print jobs which are ge...

Printer connection question
...-U guest -P This appears to print the file just fine except that it sits in the queue until another print job pushes it out. Basically, I'm just wondering if you can print to an NT printer utilizing the smbprint utility through smbclient without having to use lpr because my machine is running lpsched. Does anyone have any experience with this? Craig Weatherhead Fastenal Company Systems Administrator Phone: (507)-453-8146 Fax: (507)-453-8333 E-mail: cweather@fastenal.com

Solaris printer filter incantation?
...Then set: print command = lp -c -d %p -T pcl %s; rm %s IE: declare all samba jobs of type pcl and all HPs capable of type pcl. Instead of the lpadmin command you could edit the /etc/lp/printers/printername/configuration file and set: Content types: simple, postscript, pcl Then lpshut; lpsched the system. I also have pcl2ps installed using lpfilter. It's a perl filter I wrote that strips pcl headers off the postscript jobs created by the postscript HP drivers allowing them to be printed on postscript printers. Hope this is of some use, michaelj

Is printcap information required if no [printers] share?
...available print queues. There are about 70 Unix print queues on this system. Running "lpstat -v" can take something like 20s of wall-clock time. lpstat itself doesn't use much in the way of CPU cycles during this delay, though it is possible that busy work is going on elsewhere (lpsched daemon?). I got the load on the server back under control by creating an /etc/printcap file that just listed all the queue names, one per line, and pointing the global "printcap name" parameter at the file. System load fell back to "normal" levels very rapidly following this...

Filtering ^D and PCL headers in samba print jobs under Solaris
...bs. Local unix text jobs are going through a different filter path. For example if you like pretty borders on your unix printouts set up the system's simple to postscript filter to your taste and remove type simple from your printer definition. lpshut vi /etc/lp/printers/hp8000/configuration lpsched If you are interested I'll mail you the 2 screens of perl that constitute pcl2ps. Michaelj PS: If anyone else is interested pcl2ps would be improved by a more informative error message giving user source and jobname... Michael James _/ _/ _/ _/ _/ v +61 2 6279 8318...

smbpasswd fails on Samba 2.0.3, HPUX 10.20
I have been unable to make smbpasswd work on my new Samba version 2.0.3 (HPUX 10.20). The smb.conf was modified from a working version on Linux (version 1.9.18p8). The relevant (I hope) output from smbpasswd, smb.log and testparms follow below. Are the log messages about "Couldn't set effective gid to -24 currently set to (real=0,eff=0)" and "Can't become connected
