Using parameters in lpq command conflicts with background lpq
I have an application than makes use of the "lpq command" and uses the %U parameter in the command string. The application returns a personalized queue list based on the value of %U. This technique worked well in older versions of Samba (circa RedHat 8), but I have run into some trouble with Samba 3. The issue appears to be twofold....

need %u parameter for lpq command
Hi,
I'm developing a script for "lpq command". It would need a %U option so that the script can know which user asked for the job list. Currently, lpq command seem to only serve %p. Is there any hope to get %U ?
I see that my script run as root, so I assume the calling user info is lost ?
TIA,
Charles

Tru64 Samba queue display problem
Hi,
I'm having problems with the queue on a Tru64 box running Samba 2.2.4.
When the queue is viewed from a client machine it displays a print job with
fields equivalent to the first line the lpq command outputs.
For example, lpq returns:
# lpq -P itsgp_css1
crow.qut.edu.au: Tue May 14 09:23:54 2002:
no entries
Then if I get on a client machine (Win2k) and look at the queue there is a
single job as follows:
Document Name Status Owner Pages
11:22:41 May

pdf printing queue never empties out
...m seeing an odd problem with 3.0.10 and 3.0.11 here.
We have some pdf printers defined:
[Accounting pdf printer]

path = /pdfdropbox/Accounting
printable = yes
writeable = no
print command = /usr/bin/preprintpdf %s -r

The /usr/bin/preprintpdf just passes the job on:
#! /bin/sh
OUTDIR=/pdfdropbox
/usr/bin/printpdf -dCompatibilityLevel=1.4 "$1"
rm $1
The /usr/bin/printpdf converts the file to a pdf with ghostscript.
With 3.0.7 everything worked fine. Jobs could be printed,...

Your message Re: Samba and printer comments (July 5 1999)
...correct comments. Most printers would recieve the comment - "no
entries" which originally I assumed to be the default comment given by
Win95 when it could not get a proper comment. However I later found
that this is not the case. In fact when looking at the printer queue on
the unix side (lpq) I found that the status comment was 'no entries'.
The biggest clue to this was when I installed a particular printer it
recieved the comment 'out of paper'!
So it seems that the comment given to a printer in Win95 is 'sort of'
derived from the printer status outputted from...

Jobnames displayed by lpq: Fixed a bit
There has been some correspondence about getting the file names displayed
with lpq instead of the smbXXXXX name. The -J option works, but, with some
documents, notably Microsoft Word and Corel WP9, the application sends a
long preamble, such that the file name is never seen in the queue when
listed with lpq.
eg:
Microsoft Word - PRINT FILE NAME.doc
So, to fix this up, at least fo...

Slow Printing (2nd Attempt)
...ny application on the NT clients, or
bringing up the properties dialog for any printer takes between 10 to
30 seconds or more.
A debug run at level 10 shows the client and server doing the
authentication chat. I've also just noticed that the server
also runs the 'lpq command' for each printer the client has installed
whenever I open the "Printers" folder on the client, or whenever I
attempt to print/get properties of any one of the printers.
I would guess that is adding to the slow response if not being the
sole cause of it....

Some questions about lpq command and the displayed jobs
Hello list,
i use now Samba 3.0.2 as PDC with LDAP backend on suse sles8. With the
other versions
of Samba3 I hade the same problems with the lpq command.
I use CUPS printing system with raw options. The clientdrivers
are installed on serverside.

print command = lpr -r -oraw -P%p %s
lpq command = lpq -P'%p'

Problems while running lpq but lpr works... (samba bug?)
...e, it is always empty
(even if the printer is offline).
By turning on the debugging I saw the follwing output in the logfile:
Running the command `lpr -r -s -P kyo /var/spool/samba/mobifi.n23036' gave 0
Here, with the print command, everything works. But later we find
Running the command `lpq -PIPC$' gave 256
which fails of course since there is no printer IPC$. I have
print command = lpr -r -P %p %s
and
lpq command = lpq -P %p
in my configfile but for some reason, the substitution of %p doesn't
work in the second case... Even if I leave out the lpq command,
the result is...

Odd LPQ behavior in 3.0.x
Here is what I'm seeing after upgrading to 3.0.x:
1) Jobs no longer properly report their status, using LPRng's lpq. I see,
instead, no listing for status and a listing for number of pages in the
job. While that is also useful information, it does not allow me to act on
jobs as I'd like to (resume/pause/etc).
2) Basically EVERY job that has ever printed via Samba on that printer
since I've upgraded...

Iv'e tried many things:

- if i use the smbclient command (linux command) to connect to

windows printer queue display fails
I am driving a Suse 8.2 linux with cups 1.1.18 and samba 2.2.7a.
The problem:
The host serves several printers via cups. If some jobs are in one of
the queues "lpq -Pprinter" or "lpstat -o printer" shows up the complete
listing. Fine.
Connected to the same print queue from a Windows (XP/NT/98/2k) box I
cannot see the complete listing. Sometimes I see some of the jobs, most
of the times I don't see any.

Printing issue: lpq command

appears not only in his own printer window but also in the monitoring window
of an ordinary user who only has one job in the queue. Equally, if the
ordinary user refreshes his view, he sees just his one job again but now so
does the operator.
While trying to improve this behaviour I set "lpq cache time" to zero,
thinking this would help. (It didn't.) But I made another discovery. With
the cacheing disabled each "Refresh" from the Windows end (NT workstation)
causes THREE calls to the "lpq command" script !
Finally I tried using a separate lpq command scrip...

Annoying lpq commands appear after testparm
I am using a master-smb.conf with one other include for the shares file.
Every time that I do a testparm -s master-smb.conf and then check the
resulting file I see these config directives, which I haven't defined:
printing = cups
print command =
lpq command = %p
lprm command =
But this is after I have defined "printing = cups", any ideas why? Or is
this standard behaviour?
