fdsync takes looong
Running a PostgreSQL database and trying to understand the bottleneck in my setup. I now know there is a fdsync being issued to a database file. This one takes up to 10 seconds. The problem here is that all the other processes are entering a wait state (this is in postgres itself. The syncing process holds a latch in exclusive mode, that is needed by all others) waiting for this flush to finish.

A way to handle looong executions?
Is there somewhere I can specify a maximum execution time for a given request. (Eg, someone does something in my application that brings about and infinite loop). The idea of potentially huge queries or even a programmer mistake is not impossible, and I have a hard time accepting that I will release an application that has no way of handling that.

Connecting to SAMBA for first time takes a very looong time
I'm running Samba 3.0.14a-2 on FC4 as a print server. The system is joined to the domain and I'm using the domain security model. Pretty much, it's configured like my old Samba 2.2.7 server (which this new box is replacing). On the PC side, printers are assigned to a user via a VBScript running under a group policy. The first time that script runs and tries to add the printer

3.0.8 and looong logout time
I've got two WinXP SP2 users. Roaming profiles. One of them takes about 25 seconds to log out unless she has made pretty drastic changes to her profile (My Documents, etc). My second user takes upwards of 3 minutes to log out, even if he has just logged in, not opened a thing or made changes, and then logged back out. Below is part of a strace as I don't know what I'm looking

Recommendation for a Good Vulnerability Scanning Service?
...e minimum for PCI compliance (it's a sort of credit card processing certification). I got a free scan from https://www.hackerguardian.com/ and their scan reported a number of "Fail" results. I haven't checked them all yet but most seem to be things for which fixes were backported looong ago by The Upstream Vendor. I haven't spoken with the hackerguardian people yet but it would be nice if I could just say "I'm using CentOS 5.5" and have them factor that into their report so that I can focus on any real issues. Are there vulnerability scanning services that are m...

OT: US city proximity search
Does anyone know where I might be able to download/purchase a database of US cities and their longitude/latitude coordinates? I''d like to provide a search option on a website that allows users to search by city but include cities in the surrounding area. Thanks, Carl Youngblood _______________________________________________ Rails mailing list

Vignettes with long compute time
...can't use anything outside of base + recommended). ?4. We have a couple of 'optional' vignettes that talk about edge cases, useful to some people but not worth the size cost of cluttering up the main package. The current submission fails due to one vignette in group 4 which takes a looong time to run.? This vignette in particular is talking about compute time, and illustrates a cases where an O(n^2) case arises.?? As sentence that warns the use "of you do this it will take hours to run" is a perfect case for a pdf that should not be recreated by R CMD check. -- Terry...

PXElinux question - not in FAQ
Peter, we have met in Cyber space looong time ago, when I was requesting 10:minor numbers for the Netwinder project.... Now I am trying to build a network boot for Xandros distribution. I have it working, however I need to do 2 DHCP cycles - 1 happens in PXE, and then it repeats in my network boot code (based on BusyBox). All I need...

smb_trans2: invalid data
...one of the previous mails. Still I have a bad problem: when I mount like this: mount.smbfs //server/service /local_dir -o username=my_remote_login,uid=my_local_login,gid=users,rw and then I try to copy a file to /local_dir as the user my_local_login, the file is copied ok but then it takes a looong time to go on (perhaps when changing the file's uid or attributes, or whatever...). Actually before I set 'unix extensions = no', it took a long time even before any copying (after copying too). So now it became little better, but still quite unusable ;-) Do I do something wrong, or...

feature request: winbind use cached credentials more agressively
Hi! Winbind is rather suboptimally reacts to networking changes. I use my notebook in at least 3 different network settings, in one of them I have very probabilistic access to DCs (cisco vpn client is a crap). An nss lookup sometimes takes very looong, sometimes even returns failure. Sometimes I have to login as root and restart winbind to get to my X session past the screensaver. This is far from production quality. I guess the end-user feeling could be heightened by using cached credentials more agressively. As wast majority of nss lookups ar...

Samba and NFS locking on Netapp filers ?
Hello I have troubles with some shares that are NFS mounted to a Netapp filer, if I enable locking on that share, the file cannot be opened by the windows client in write mode ( read only after a looong time ) Anyone has the same problem , it seems to be a Netapp bug but they do not support samba at all :-) so I don't expect any answer from them. thanks

Some loglog density plot
Dear all, A looong time ago, Witold Eryk Wolski asked here why there wasn't a log="xy" parameter to the hist() function <URL:http://www.R-project.org/nocvs/mail/r-help/2001/0267.html>, and Prof. Ripley responded that a loglog histogram does not make much sense, and that one should use a better den...

Especially when said email address (Apple hide my email in this case) won?t let you use the same address to send to multiple addresses - so I had to spoof a message to ?user-request@? so that I could use it to send further emails to ?user@?. I?ve been on the Internet a looong time, and these old mailman style things aren?t that common these days. I am involved in a lot of community projects though, so I do understand the need for cheap and platform-less. > I'm also wondering why I hear something like this from someone who I > don't know from this list, IR...

as.data.frame requires a lot of memory (PR#14140)
...ory usage while it should only require 17.6gb (2*8.8gb). dfn <- rep(list(rep(0, 4096)), 4096) test <- as.data.frame.list(dfn) I also tried the incremental construction of the data-frame: df$colN <- dataForColN. While I currently can't say much about the memory usage, it takes a looong time. After the construction the saved-and-loaded data-frame has the expected size. What is the recommended way to construct larger data-frames?

Moving dovecot/maildir to new host, dovecot.* files
Hello, I've done a fair amount of searching, and couldn't find a definitive answer. I am moving my dovecot/postfix servers and mail in Maildir formats to a new host. When I move the Maildir directories, what should I do with the dovecot.index/cache/log/etc. files? I know I can filter them out, and dovecot will recreate them, but is that the best approach? I am thinking of the following:

Howto migrate shares from samba 3 / ADUC changing uid/uidnumber when activating UNIX (posix) attributes

I've setup an AD DC (Debian wheezy with samba from backports) that will only handle authentication and a second AD DC that will also ser...
