Dovecot proxy: Too many open files
It appears that when running Dovecot as a proxy-only box with "login_process_per_connection = no", it ignores the value of login_max_logging_users. And in Linux, since each socket requires a file descriptor, if you don't increase the maximum number of open files that each process is allowed to have open, imap-login will reach the 1024 open file limit and start logging the following errors: imap-login: socket() failed: Too many open...

Another "Too many files open" post
...After the reboot, ulimit -a should >show that nofiles(descriptors) is 32768. > >-Jeff And I found this from Jeff Earickson: >I ran into this problem with alpha4 on Solaris 9. I doubled the >following dovecot settings: > >login_max_processes_count = 256 (was 128) >login_max_logging_users = 512 (was 256) > >and the problem went away. I carried these numbers forward intoalpha5, >and it has been working fine. I changed my /etc/system file but have not rebooted yet. dovecot process dies
...6 (login) killed with signal 11 Aug 10 10:39:18 proxy dovecot: child 29037 (login) killed with signal 11 Aug 10 10:39:18 proxy dovecot: child 29038 (login) killed with signal 11 I tinkered with the login_* configuration options but to no avail. The only configuration option that I removed is the login_max_logging_users, which is now deprecated in the new version. I tried to google about this problem but what I found were related to other processes such as imap etc. Thanks in advance for your help. -- Ceasar

Excessive imap-login and pop3-login processes
...ually around 50 or so. The comments in the config file seem to indicate that, with my setup, I shouldn't see more than about 10 of each. Am I misunderstanding the config or is this expected behavior? login_process_per_connection = no login_processes_count = 10 login_max_processes_count = 128 login_max_logging_users = 256 The mail server receives about 1.5 - 3 logins per second and usually has around 75 simultaneous IMAP sessions.
