Dovecot proxy: Too many open files
It appears that when running Dovecot as a proxy-only box with "login_process_per_connection = no", it ignores the value of login_max_logging_users. And in Linux, since each socket requires a file descriptor, if you don't increase the maximum number of open files that each process is allowed to have open, imap-login will reach the 1024 open file limit and start logging the following errors:
imap-login: socket() failed: Too many open...

I changed my /etc/system file but have not rebooted yet. Also, on Jeff

I tinkered with the login_* configuration options but to no avail. The
only configuration option that I removed is the
login_max_logging_users, which is now deprecated in the new version.
I tried to google about this problem but what I found were related to
other processes such as imap etc.
Thanks in advance for your help.

new mails don't always show
...er folders without a problem during this period.
Again, a simple mail to myself 'solved' this.
This behaviour does not happen all the time and I don't know how to
trigger/reproduce it.
Just the relevant (imho) parts of dovecot.conf:
login_process_size = 256
login_processes_count = 64
login_max_logging_users = 1024
default_mail_env = maildir:%h/Maildir
client_workarounds = outlook-idle oe6-fetch-no-newmail
outlook-pop3-no-nuls
everything else is set to default values
Any ideas/help?
Thanks

The comments in the config file seem to indicate that, with my setup, I

The mail server receives about 1.5 - 3 logins per second and usually has

Timo,
The gdb analysis is attached. It looks like memory got seriously

mbox format, INBOXes NFS mounted, index files on local ufs

I?m running winbind to authenticate against Active Directory, I?ve edited my
