CampingConf?
Campers -- In a few weeks there will be a bunch of people in Portland, OR, for a conference. A long time ago some campers mentioned that might be a good time for us to get together and hold a mini CampingConf for a few hours. Is anyone interested? Does anyone want to organize it? I''m thinking Wednesday night, May 16. We could possibly get a spot at FreeGeek (not likely since they are

customizing global request handler
what is the cleanest way to do something for every request of a particular type (Verb, and Content-Type header)? i''m trying to figure out if shipping a custom camping.rb is avoidable, and if, how i should structure a patch my app http://whats-your.name/yard/ uses exclusively JSON based messaging between server and client. this means POST bodies are JSON, and not querystring.. camping

What I am doing with Puppet.
Hi, Luke asked me if I was willing to share what I am doing with the Puppet user community. So here goes: I am using puppet to manage one host right now. While that isn''t a good advertisement for Puppet''s scaling capabilities, I find it interesting because I built my single node (personal mail, svn, ci and web server) with puppet where I could (clearly there was some

Some newbie questions
Hi all, I''m newly discovering Ferret, and just did a crash course on Lucene to (I get the concepts behind it). But I''m have a few doubts: 1. What is the ''recommended'' way of integrating Ferret into my app now? The gem version or the plugin? 2. Where do I checkout the plugin from? Do I just copy the version on the wiki? Those apart, Ferret is really

ANN: acts_as_ferret
Hi all This week I have worked with Rails and Ferret to test Ferrets (and Lucenes) capabilities. I decided to make a mixin for ActiveRecord as it seemed the simplest possible solution and I ended up making this into a plugin. For more info on Ferret see: http://ferret.davebalmain.com/trac/ The plugin is functional but could easily be refined. Anyway I want to share it with you. Regard it as a

return ONLY total_hits without querying from real database
Hey guys, I know I can run search(q).total_hits, but if I try to put :limit=>0 it gives me an error. I don''t want it actually query any of the results, I just want it to tell me how many total_hits I would have if I wanted to search it. How can I do this? -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.

[WARNING] don''t use ruby-sendfile
Hi Folks, I''ve been getting reports of people with serious stability problems in Mongrel. These problems go away instantly when they remove ruby-sendfile. If your mongrel starts up saying that you have "sendfile installed" and that it is using it then **you are wrong**. Remove the gem and don''t use it. I''ll be investigating why it doesn''t really

Puppet/webrick benchmark
We haven''t been able to use mongrel for testing yet, but in order not to waste time, we did some performance testing with 1, 2 and 4 puppetmasterd/webrick processes. Attached is an HTML page (ripped from our wiki - not pretty, but reasonably readable) which describes the method and results. If someone feels like making some nice graphs, that would be great. If not, I''ll try to

SingleTableInheritance Considered Harmful
Here''s the text of a quick note I''ve added to the Inheritance wiki page. I''m actually proposing that it would be a good idea to drop automatic single table inheritance and force people to declare it explicitly. There are two reasons for this: 1. Implicitly doing it unnecessarially limits your use of inheritance where you really need it: in your object-oriented
