Understanding the role of DMB/LMB on a net that has a WINS server
If I have a client that wants to enumerate and access shares on a
subnet, and that client knows the IP of the WINS server, is there any
need for the client to use the "browsing" services of a DMB or LMB?
What is the order of operations of the client? Here is what I imagine
to be the case:
1. client asks LMB for a list of all available shares
2. LMB sends client the list of all known shares
3. for each name in the list of known shares, client asks WINS
server for the server's IP addre...

Comparing Von Bertalanffy Growth Curves

This code is pretty cut and dry. I am able to run it perfectly with the "fake" data that is provided. But when I run it with my own data I get stuck with this line:
fitGen <- nls(vbGen,data=LMB,start=svGen)
?
I get this error code: Error in numericDeriv(form[[3L]], names(ind), env) : Missing value or an infinity produced when evaluating the model.
?
Does anyone know how to fix it? I have no missing values and do not know how to fix the infinity produced.
Here is my data set: structure(...

SAMBA Browse Lists Sync DMB and LMB

causing LMB elections
...ith 200+ W98 machines for
some time. I'm changing to W2k and everything was going fine.
I've upgraded 40 boxes. One W2k box has started announcing itself
as a local master browser for one of the workgroups. A samba
server thinks it is master, forcing election. Samba will stop
being the LMB for about 3 minutes and then will re-establish
itself as LMB. In a couple of minutes the same W2k box will
force another election. This is occuring every 4 to 5 minutes,
none stop. In the smb.conf file, os level = 64. I have
tried higher levels. Changing this parameter doesn't seem to
have...

Windows LMB and Samba DMB problems.
Note: LMB = Local Master Browser
DMB = Domain Master Browser
Have Samba 2.2.7A running embedded in a variant of ucLinux.
My interest was only to use Samba as a WINS server.
I've set up the SMB.CONF with this config. for one test:
wins support = yes
local master = no
domain master = yes

Netbios over more then one protocol
...every NetBIOS
network interface. In the case of a Windows 9x/Me machine that has both
TCP/IP and IPX installed and has NetBIOS enabled over both protocols,
the election will be decided over both protocols. As often happens, if
the Windows 9x/Me machine is the only one with both protocols, then the
LMB may be won on the NetBIOS interface over the IPX protocol. Samba
will then lose the LMB role because Windows 9x/Me will insist it knows
who the LMB is. Samba will then cease to function as an LMB, and browse
list operation on all TCP/IP-only machines will therefore fail...
what exactly happens if...

how many linux boxes do I need????
...ork has two lans A and B, I plan to install a
SAMBA server in network A and have it act as a WINS
Server too.
I've been reading the online version of "Using Samba"
and I am confused about the Local Master Browser
issues, from the book I could draw that almost any
machine can act as a LMB however, only NT and above
(below) would be able to contact a DMB.
So, Would I require a Samba server in lan B in order
to be able to use my samba server as a LMB for network
A?
thanks,
esv.

problem with samba like LMB on windows network
hello,
i have problem with Local Master Browser (LMB) election on our network
and i'd like to ask you for help.
we have setup local network for wireless internet connection sharing. it
uses 10.0.0.0/255.0.0.0 range and computers use common workgroup (named

When and how often are elections held for LMB?
Can someone clarify this for me? The docs are not clear. It seems that an election is held when:
* There is no LMB or the current LMB shuts down.
* A machine joins the network with "preferred master = yes" and forces an election.
Any other times when an election is held?
What's also not clear is how OFTEN the election is held. The how-to makes a passing reference that "two machines with &q...

Reshape package and variable assignment
...is create a series of new
variables (one for each unique species code....four in this shortened example) that contain
the matching CAU variable value for each corresponding species code listed for each row of the
data set. Example (row 1), the new variable SMB would equal 3 (CAU1) and YP, WE, and LMB would
contain zero. Example (row 2), the new variable YP would contain 30, and WE would contain 6,
whereas SMB and LMB would contain zero. If this description is unclear, the examples below should
illustrate what I what to do.
I have been advised that the reshape package could be useful here b...

warnquota email domain ?
Dear All,
Sorry if this is the wrong place for this question, or if I'm just being daft,
but I can't get warnquota to send emails to the right address.
When I put a test user (gollum) over quota, and run warnquota on a server
(nfs2.lmb.internal), the email generated by warnquota appears in the maillog
as "to=<gollum at nfs2.lmb.internal>," What I need is the email to go
to "gollum at lmb.internal"
I have four NFS servers, using NIS / automounts (no LDAP), my users all have
email addresses <USERID...

LMB and browse.dat Updates
I realize this is most likely the most killed topic anyone on the net. Most
of the information i've found don't directly answer this question.
I have a Samba server set up as the DMB and LMB via smb.conf. I have set up
nmbd to do WINS. I setup all my XP box clients to use my Samba server.
I ran Ethereal on the server and can see the Samba server wins election for
DMA and LMB. I can also see each PC registering with Samba. The
/var/lib/samba/wins.bat is correct but the browse.dat f...

Multiple workgroups : Multiple Subnets
...throw in the towel. I had hoped to find a solution
that would permit a Windows PC to browse a (MS) workgroup (ie retrieve the
browse list from the workgroup master browser for a remote (MS) workgroup when
that MB is NOT a samba server). Since WINS only provides the broadcast
address of the remote LMB and that broadcast will not reach the remote LAN,
here are some of the other things I have tried;
1) force samba to use lmhosts before wins (resolv order), and
put the name of remote workgroup LMB (other than the remote samba server)
in the lmhosts file (since lmhosts permits the use of that 16th...

LMB question
Can somebody explain to me how the whole Local Master Browser thing works?
I'm running samba across 3 subnets, and all the docs tell you to set up a
Local Master Browser on each subnet. I couldn't find any documentation on
how to actually do that so I used the remote announce option in smb.conf,
and it's working great, but now there are two machines (one for each
subnet outside of the

I wanted to know which boxes were the LMBs and the DMB, so I looked
into the wins.dat on the WINS server. But in wins.dat, I only see one
line that has MSBROWSE in it:

Is this supposed to be the DMB? Why the 255.255.255.255 address? I
would expect there to be a host...

lmb can't sync browse list with dmb, find_domain_master_name_query_fail
Hello.
Browsing accross subnets fails because "route2-3" can't sync its
local browse list with the domain master browser "classix", which
is also the WINS server. Everything else is fine. There is 1 and
only 1 WINS server (classix) and no NT server.
The error message in nmb log of route2-3 is:

Network Neighborhoods from either subnet is the Samba server itself and not

However I can resolve the name with a standard UNC like \\2kas-server, it just
doesn't get an icon.
I have verified that Samba servers are able to communicate to the Microsoft

That the Samba server acting as a DMB (domain...

Is it set to True in a local policy?
Why aren't your win2k boxes seeing the samba server as the LMB?
If they did, they wouldn't be forcing elections...
