Wine off a LiveUSB
I created an article at the Wine Wiki. Is such an idea worthwhile? In my view, this makes sense in case you have no Linux installed on your HDD, but running Wine from Git is needed.

Feel free to remove my article if you found it unneeded.

Installing 6.0 via USB
I'm using LiveUSB-Creator to create a bootable USB drive from
CentOS-6.0-i386-netinstall.iso, and it gives me an error at startup:
vesamenu.c32: Not a COM32R image
I can hit tab and select "linux" and then it loads vmlinux and the initrd,
says "Ready", and then just hangs. I'm not sure wh...

true, i did not say how i created cd's.
i used k3b as it is easier, less to remember, than using command line.
usb's sticks were created using unetbootin and fedora-liveusb-creator.
yes, i did not mention that i tried with 2 usb sticks. failure was
same, did not feel it mattered. failure is failure.

SUMMARY: mounting datasets from a read-only pool with aid of tmpfs
...nconvenience that might need some improvement, i.e.
to allow (forced?) use of "mount -F zfs" even for datasets
with the mountpoint property defined.
Here goes the detailed version:
I was evacuating data from a corrupted rpool which I could
only import read-only while booted from a LiveUSB. As I wrote
previously, I could not use "zfs send" (bug now submitted to
Illumos tracker), so I reverted to directly mounting datasets
and copying data off them into another location (into a similar
dataset hierarchy on my data pool), i.e.:
# zpool import -R /POOL pool
# zpool import -R...

No, unetbootin is pretty unreliable. I've actually not had it work
reliably with Fedora ISOs since forever, but I mainly use (U)EFI
systems is possibly why,...

Notes on booting CentOS 6 natively on GPT with an EFI bootloader such as Chameleon without BIOS GPT/EFI support.
...systems as you like. When the install prompts for bootloader installation location, you DO NOT want to install to the MBR (Chameleon is there); rather, install it to the /boot partition (on my test system this was /dev/sda3). Finish the installation. It won't yet be bootable.
Now, boot your liveUSB stick. When you get your desktop, pull up a terminal and become root. At the root prompt, invoke gdisk just like you would fdisk, making sure to get the right disk device and partition. The command set for gdisk is virtually identical to fdisk. Use 'p' to list the partitions; you'll...

Networking issue, C6.2 LiveDVD x86_64
...ather wierd issue I experienced Saturday with CentOS 6.2 LiveDVD, x86_64. I'm posting this information in hope that someone may have seen something similar.
I use a USB key with CentOS 6.2 LiveDVD loaded, with an encrypted home filesystem, built using the instructions on the CentOS wiki for a LiveUSB build, and it was built by a CentOS 6.2 x86_64 system with the livecd-iso-to-disk.sh tool. It has worked fine for general usage for a while, now.
I began a disk image backup of a Dell Inspiron 1420 laptop Saturday, using dd piped into ssh to a file, on an RHEL6 server (RHEL6.2, i686 dist, fully...

Single-disk rpool with inconsistent checksums, import fails
Hello all,
I have an oi_148a PC with a single root disk, and since
recently it fails to boot - hangs after the copyright
message whenever I use any of my GRUB menu options.
Booting with an oi_148a LiveUSB I had around since
installation, I ran some zdb traversals over the rpool
and zpool import attempts. The imports fail by running
the kernel out of RAM (as recently discussed in the
list with Paul Kraus''s problems).
However, in my current case, the rpool has just 11.2Gb
allocated with 8.7G...

Introduction
...let me know if that's not the case, I don't want to barge in
and step on anyone's toes :).
I'll make a pull request against the docs repo when I have something
relatively publishable. I'll also try to make sure that the changes you
made to the HTML book (e.g. removing Fedora LiveUSB Creator, warning
about the upgrade tool not working, etc.) appear in the converted
version as well.
As for my background, I've spent the last roughly 5.5 years as a
technical writer for Red Hat, most of the time I was working on the RHEL
6 and 7 Installation Guides, so I'm fairly famil...

"upstream testing"??
Which System76 model? How is the install media created? Presumably it's a
USB stick, but how is it being created?
The easiest and most reliable is to use dd. Livecd-tools is also reliable
but has a number of options required to boot UEFi systems. LiveUSB Creator
should work. Everything else is prone to failure.
CentOS 6.4 is kinda old for new hardware. You're better off looking at
CentOS 7.1.

"zfs hold" and "zfs send" on a readonly pool
...l/ROOT/oi_148a at 20110401'': pool is read-only
cannot hold ''rpool/ROOT/oi_148a at 20110430'': pool is read-only
cannot hold ''rpool/ROOT/oi_148a at 20111028-01'': pool is read-only
IMHO this is a bug (some checks are due in zfs code - this
is an oi_148a liveusb); however - are any workarounds possible
with this code as is? Perhaps, some kernel tunables to set
with MDB?
Of course, I can cpio this data both ways with little loss
in this case, but the problem for broken pool evacuation was
unexpected. I should''ve at least reported it ;)
Thanks...

Sandbox Error Running Wine Live
Again, I have another program that will not run Live with Wine, but if I run it as root it does run. It seems as if this "Running Live" issue is being ignored, although Running Live is a common feature with many Linux distros and is one great security environment vs. Running off hard disk. Yet having to run as root to get apps going in Live environment is occurning with more apps as I

Centos6: Boot from usb 3.0
Hi all,
I'm booting Centos6 from a usb 3.0 stick.
This works fine as long as the usb-stick is connected to a usb 2.0 port.
Once I plug the the usb-stick into a blue usb 3.0 port centos fails on
mounting the root filesystem.
Any hints on that?

Problem installing Centos 6.4/6.5 from USB stick seen as HDD by BIOS
I'm trying to install C6.5 on a USB stick (created using Fedora
LiveUSB Creator).
The problem is the machine using an Intel ITX board sets the USB stick
as a HDD instead of a CDROM. During install, the DVD couldn't find the
installer automatically and I must choose the HDD option for it to
proceed to network/timezone/storage setup.
After the storage partitioning,...
