fitting growth curves
Dear R-list members, Cynthia M. Jones wrote a paper (Fitting growth curves to retrospective size-at-age data, Fisheries Research 46(2000):123-129; abstract at http://www.elsevier.nl/gej-ng/10/19/44/70/24/37/abstract.html)where the SAS procedure MIXED, Macro NLINMIX (Littell et. al., 1996)was used to estimate the von Bertalanffy growth function parameters assuming that data from the same fish are repeated-measures with autoregressive correlation structure and fitting with a nonlinear repeated-measures model. Is there any similar procedure that I can use in R? Thanks,...

Where does a newbie get started?
I heard this project mentioned on the MythTV mailing list this weekend. I'm interested in finding more out about the way * works, but I can't seem to find something that talks about the benefits of having such a program in a home with a single line. What type of hardware would be required and any additional wiring that may be required. Does * support different rings for different callers

Is this a bug in Ajax handling?
When a controller responds to a link_to_remote with a redirect_to, the link_to_remote gets a success callback, this would seem like a bug to me, at a minimum it should return a failure? This is driving me crazy because all the login engines/generators respond to an authentication error with a redirect_to. The work around is to change them to all do a render :layout => false, :status => 500

long-standing documentation bug in ?anova.lme
...es like aov()). Federico Calboli pointed this out on r-help in 2004: https://stat.ethz.ch/pipermail/r-help/2004-May/051444.html Two more points: * the last sentence of the Description might need one fewer comma [after "statistic"] or one more [after "p-value"]. * in ?lme, Littell's name is misspelled at least twice and Reinsel's at least once. Is there a publicly accessible SVN server for recommended packages (in general) and nlme (in particular) anywhere? cheers Ben Bolker

repeated measures and covariance structures
Hello- I'm trying to do some repeated measures ANOVAs. In the past, using SAS, I have used the framework outlined in Littell et al.'s "SAS System for Mixed Models", using the REPEATED statement in PROC MIXED to model variation across time within an experimental unit. SAS allows you to specify different within-unit covariance structures (e.g., compound symmetric, AR(1), etc.) to determine the best model. I&...

Get Mic-In for Speex
Hi, anyone knows how i can get the input from a mircophone as a byte-array stream in VC++ ?? So that i can encode it with speex an send it away. The second thing is, to decode the speex frame and play it on the speakers. It would be helpfull if you can give me a link to a site which explains this topic an include some littel code sampels. Thanks. Best regards Sören Krings mailto:spontexx@web.de

Nolinear mixed-effects models (nlme)
Hello, I am trying to fit a nonlinear model of the form of: A*x^b*exp(-c*x) This represents a lactation curve. I have a bunch of cows, so I want COW to be a random effect. I have been trying the following code with very littel success: > fm1 <- nlme(yield ~ A*(DIM^B)*(exp(-C*DIM)), + data = group, + fixed = A + B + C ~ 1, + start = c(A = 20, B =

Summary: proc mixed vs. lme
Summary: proc mixed vs. lme The objective of this summary is to help people to get more familiar with the specification of random effects with proc mixed or lme. Very useful are the examples of Ramon Littell's book: "SAS System for Mixed Models (1996)" (http://ftp.sas.com/samples/A55235) The same data set's are kindly made available by Douglas Bates in the library(SASmixed). In the help file are examples of the lme statements equivalent to the proc mixed ones. To explain the diffe...

TMD card to buy.
Hi Rich, good advice about buying grandstream SIP handsets instead of using analog handsets though I think you might that using a 30 channel E1 in Hungary is tough to get. Can you also explain to him about Channel Banks. Problem ith file_column
Hi, I am facing a serious problem with file_column plugin. Though it is absolutely fine while uploading images, and the way it uploads the image on the file system and stores the file name in a database table is awsome. But while I try to get the image by passing its ID, surprisingly it returns the full absolute path rather than the image name! I would like to give a littel more description about

Dovecot and Apples Mail.app
Hi, I have a littel Problem. I?m running a Debian Lenny/Postfix/Dovecot Server. I hade immigrated from Courierer. Now I have the problem, that I get mail under Mail.app double. (same header, Message-ID ,...) When I use Thudnerbird under MacOS there is all OK. Are there some Configs that I need to make for MacOS / Mail.app ? I use IMAPS with all the clients (pop3 is only for 1 account - a

...elihood (ML) or restricted maximum likelihood (REML) estimates for linear mixed-effects models with single or multiple nested levels of random effects. The library includes a SAS_Mixed directory with R transcripts of analyses paralleling those in the book "SAS System for Mixed Models" by Littell, Milliken, Stroup and Wolfinger. Please ensure that you get the lme_2.9-2.tar.gz file. The lme_2.9-1.tar.gz file has problems with installation of the help files and has the wrong version listed in the DESCRIPTION file. tcl/tk bind destroy event
Hello! I want to create a messagebox whenever the user wants to destroy the window (e.g. <Alt-F4> or the 'x' in the right top corner) and ask if a modified file should be saved or not. If 'cancel' is chosen then nothing should happen and the windows still should be existing. This doesn't work. When I press cancel the window will be destroyed although. I also

lme degrees of freedoms: SAS and R
Dear list, I ran a mixed effect model using R 1.4.1 and SAS 8.0 on the SIMS data found in the SASmixed package and found that the degrees of freedoms for fixed effects are very different. From R, df = n - v -1 where n is total # of observations, v is the # of levels for the grouping factor. From SAS df = v -1. Am I wrong about this or can somebody explain which is correct and why? Thanks a

size speex file encoded
Hi, I am working with libspeex api. I would like compare the size of speex file encoded with libspeex and the size of speex file encoded with speexenc. For example, I encode with speexenc (narrowband, quality 1) a wav file of 1.43 MB (17 seconds) output a spx file weight 21KB, for other hand I encode with libspeex the same wav file with same characteristics in arm processor, pocket pc and the

PROC MIXED user trying to use (n)lme...
Dear R-users Coming from a proc mixed (SAS) background I am trying to get into the use of (n)lme. In this connection, I have some (presumably stupid) questions which I am sure someone out there can answer: 1) With proc mixed it is easy to get a hold on the estimated variance parameters as they can be put out into a SAS data set. How do I do the same with lme-objects? For example, I can see the

Routes from raw js (using XMLHttpRequest)
I am making an ajax call from js to call a method (assocboxchange) in my controller (AssociatesController), using XMLHttpRequest. I know the XMLHttpRequest works fine because I use it in other places with success. My problem is my URL I am using for this request doesn;t access the method in my controller which I (think) I am specifying. I am having it post to /channels/assocboxchange/" with
