VMware and NetBios Problem
With WinXP host, RH8 VMware guest, at level 3, I issue:
mount -t smbfs -o user,noauto,dmask=777,fmask=777,username=xx,
password=yy //DELLBOX/linuxShare /mnt/linuxShare
and get:
Connection to DELLBOX failed
SMB connection failed
timeout connecting to 192.168.113.1:139
Error connecting to 192.168.113.1
I cannot find this IP address anywhere. My tables indicate
that port 139 is related to NETBIOS, but I don't know how
to deal with thi...

RH8 guest: bad fs?
I recently reinstalled RH8 as a VMware guest on a WinXP box.
I used a previously proven script at level 3, containing, in
one line with no inappropriate spaces:
mount -t smbfs -o user,noauto,dmask=777,fmask=777,username=xx,
password=yy //DELLBOX/linuxShare /mnt/linuxShare
I get a failure that reports numerous possibilities including
bad fs, and other other things. I suspect I omitted a step
in the installation. I used the standard RH8 Workstation install,
and later executed an upgrade to get Samba.
Pings are successful in both directions.

smbfs: user cannot create file
...inXP; Guest: Linux 8.0:
Following advice I received elsewhere yesterday,
I modified Linux start up files (level 3) with
mount -t smbfs to connect to a shared directory in
WinXP. On WinXP, both the directory and the share
permissions give full control to Everyone. On
Linux, the both /mnt and /mnt/linuxShare have
drwxrwxrwx.
As root, on the Linux side I have full control in the
shared out directory.
As another user in Linux, I cannot create a new file in
the shared out directory. This fails with cp, vi, and
touch. Oddly, I can use vi to modify a preexisting file.
Advice would be much appreciated....

totally confused, samba flipflop fuctionality
...communication both way's.
On the Windows box I created a Linux user account. In
this account I created only shared folders. This is
the account that has loaded using either smbclient. I
just check this and it is still working for me ! When
mounted I can view the files on my XP
/familypc/linux/linuxshare in the mounted folder on my
FC3 box which is where I'm sitting and writing this
message from.
I just added a 2nd linux box running FC4. This a home
network with 3 machines. Two Linux boxes and a XP.
I have the same smb.conf setting on my FC4 with this
exception:
netbios name = Samba Server o...
