help with Samba and WinXp Pro
...server from
machines attached to the wireless
router, ( one Mac OS X & one Win98), but I can't connect to the samba
server from the WinXP Pro
machine. I put the IP address of the linux machine as the WINS in WinXP
and enable NETBIOS over
TCP/IP. Everytime when I try to use "net view \\linuxmachine" or "net
view \\IP of the linuxmachine", I got
the error message
"System error 53 has occured"
and " The network path was not found" .
Can anyone help me to look into this? Thanks a lot.

Help request setting w2000 to use Lexmark z25 printer on linux RH7.3 running samba.
...the lp directive is set to
lp=/dev/null. (in case this piece of information is relevant).
On smb.conf I set the printer definition to:
[lexmarkz25-z35]
comment = lexmarkz25-z35
browseable = yes
printable = yes
I can see the printers from the w2000 client when I contact the server
using \\Linuxmachine\
When I try to use any of the printers I get the message:
"Before you can use the printer \\Linuxmachine\lexmark it must be setup
on your computer. Do you want Windows to set up the printer and continue
the operation?"
Click the "Yes" button gives me another dialog:

Configuring Samba with NIS
Hey all.
I have a bunch of linux servers, all using NIS to maintain username/password/UID/GID information. I'm trying to make the filesystems browsable from Windows XP, while maintaining correct UID/GID info. It seems this would be really simple, just let the user login to \\linuxmachine with his/her linux username & password, and everything they do happens as them. As you know - no such thing. :-(
I'm using RHEL 4u4 x86_64, samba 3.0.10-1.4E.9, swat 3.0.10-1.4E.9
In swat, it seems to indicate available "auth methods" are "guest sam winbind" and som...

export R data as web service
...a HTTP. My
particular use case would be R on Linux, accessing data from Windows,
all on the same intranet.
Naively, when I say this, I imagine something like:
> theData <- big.calculation.returning.data.frame()
> startHttpServer(port=8675)
(blocks until I C-c it)
Elsewhere...
http://linuxmachine:8675/htmlDF?theData

or
http://linuxmachine:8675/csvDF?theData
-> CSV export of data frame
Then I C-c my server and continue working in R.
Rserve has its own protocol, plus it spawns extra processes. biocep
looks interesting, but it's far...

read_data: read failure for 4. Error = Connection reset by peer
This is from the client log of the linuxmachine. I cant find any
information in smbd.log or nmbd.log they look normal.
I also get an annoying ok-message box.
The machines are sitting on the same switch. Have the same subnetmask.
Both ip's are public ips.

I use mount -t smbfs to mount some W2K shares on linux:
//windows-1/AccountingData on /mnt/AccountingData type smbfs (0)
//windows-1/Database on /mnt/Database type smbfs (0)
//windows-2/Backup on /mnt/backup type smbfs (0)
The command and output that I get is as follows:
[root@linuxmachine]# tar c /mnt/Database > /mnt/backup/DatabaseFeb7.tar
tar: /mnt/Database/Corporate Database.mdb: file changed as we read it
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors
- I also get the "file changes as we read it" if I try to do the same thing

Samba client cannot join Samba Domain
...ated,
but is disabled (the same thing happens if I use smbpasswd).
A working entry for a Windows client (in smbpasswd format) looks like:
winmachine$:502:XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX:42DFEDCD433EE93E7D27BEA0457AA64D:
[W ]:LCT-4487EFD8:
While the Linux machine's entry looks like:
linuxmachine$:503:XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX:XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX:
[DW ]:LCT-00000000:
I've tried viewing the debug output from the Samba server but I can't see
anything useful there. Any suggestions as to what may be going wrong would be
greatly appreciated!

...(coming with SuSE 7.3).
The clients are win9x and linux PCs.
If you logon on the nt-server with a win9x PC (with a username and a valid
password) you can see all shares and you can (without a second
authentification) access the shares.
But if you try smbmount a share of the samba server with a linuxmachine you
need a different password (that one saved in smbpasswd) althought it is
configured to use the nt server as the logonserver.

...ba by typing " service smb restart "
and it works fine I am using Samba 2.0.7 and the workgroup I want to
connect to is a Windows workgroup.
We are using the DHCP server for IP address
resolution. I have also configured the Network configurator on Linux machine
but I am unable to
open my Linuxmachine from windows network neighbourhood
If you don`t mind please reply to the mail
because I think you are quite knowledgeable in Samba configuration.
Thanks and I appreciate it
