Are these instructions meant to be executed on CentOS 1804?
Good afternoon from Singapore, I came across this Linux Journal article titled "DIY: Build a Custom Minimal Linux Distribution from Source", written by Petros Koutoupis. Link: <https://www.linuxjournal.com/content/diy-build-custom-minimal-linux-distribution-source> https://www.linuxjournal.com/content/diy-build-custom-minimal-linux-distribution-source Are the instructions in this article meant to be executed with ease on CentOS 1804 or perhaps easier on other Linux distros? Please advise. Th...

...in the top 3 (along with Ubuntu and
FedoraCore).
Thanks to every one who voted for CentOS. I really did not expect that
we would be on the final ballot, though I am honored that we are.
Now, lets do it again, and shock the world :)
Please go to Linux Journal and vote for CentOS !!!

smb-ldap or not to smb-ldap
Hi all,
We are deploying a Linux server and desktops for a customer. We will
have the users and groups in LDAP on the server, and files shared via NFS.
However, one never knows if Windows desktops will be needed in the
future. Is it a good idea to add users with smb-ldap even if samba is
not initially used, as adding the samba attributes to an existing LDAP
database is painful, and the

WPA Radius wireless authentication and CentOS 5
...ove my FC 6 boxes to CentOS 5 so I decided to pick on the
laptop first. Unfortunately, I neglected to backup /etc before doing
the CentOS 5 install (bad Dave, bad Dave) so I don't have my previously
working configuration for reference.
I attempted to follow the instructions at:
http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/8017
http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/8095
http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/8151
that I had previously used to get the laptop authenticating with FC6.
All I can ever get the radius server to spew is:

S.M.A.R.T
At my physics lab we have 30 servers with 1TB disk packs. I am in need
of monitoring for disk failures. I have been reading about SMART and
it seems it can help. However, I am not sure what to look for if a
drive is about to fail. Any thoughts about this? Is anyone using this
method to predetermine disk failures?
TIA

Converting asterisk h264 recordings
Hello,
We are setting up an asterisk system for voicemail with video possibilities.
We are not using the voicemail app, but rather writing our own dialplan
logic. The part of recording, and replaying, the voicemail works, and we
receive both an h264 and an wav-file. What I now wonder is how to convert
these into one file playable by a (standard) media player. I have not found
any real good

Daemon-mode authentication documentation
I have found reference a couple of places on the web describing the
details of authentication when rsync'ing with the server in
daemon/non-shell mode. For example:
http://www.linuxjournal.com/article.php?sid=6508
"rsync's authentication mechanism, available only when run in d?mon
mode, is based on a reasonably strong 128-bit MD5 challenge-response
scheme. This is superior to standard FTP authentication for two
reasons. First, passwords are not transmitted over the netw...

freenx-0.5.0-8.c4.noarch.rpm is in testing
We have created a new version of freenx (freenx-0.5.0-8.c4.noarch.rpm)
and moved it to the testing repo.
This is based on the code displayed at the LWE in San Francisco ...

(though it is not officially released as stable by the freenx people)
This version should handle printing and reconnecting to running sessions
much better.
Running sessions (on the nx server, that is the machine you are
connecting to) are stored in "/var/lib/nxserver/db/r...

Ultimate Linux Box (was RE: optimal windows R machine)
Well, maybe this is sort of related...
Eric Raymond has written an article for the Linux Journal on how to build an
Ultimate Linux Box. You can find the whole thing at
http://www2.linuxjournal.com/cgi-bin/frames.pl/articles/style/0014.html
The machine is said to compile the Linux 2.4.9 kernel in 1 min. 50 sec. I
wonder how long it might take to build R on this beast...
Cheers,
Andy

[Bridge] aoe/vblade on "localhost"
...quot;server end" (see this like an iSCSI target)
there is a software equivalent to etherblade storage which is called vblade (part of the aoetools project) - or vblade-kernel (another implementation, but done as a kernel module)
a very nice article about what AoE is can be found at http://www.linuxjournal.com/comment/reply/8149
what i want to do is nicely described in this bugreport by some other person:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=336772
i want to connect a AoE driver to vblade on _one_ host and i have tried that mentioned "clever juggling of network devices" on...

DKMS and new(er) Nvidia-drivers
I got the DKMS-system working and now have the Nvidia-drivers v173.08
installed (using rpmforge as suggested previously). Unfortunately this
particular driver version gives me screen artifacts so as to make the screen
more or less unreadable.
Nvidia's proprietary drivers are now up to v180.44 and this version is fine
with my test system.
I really like the DKMS-system, as it enables me

I want to blog!
This isn''t Rails or Ruby related, but I just need some advice and
thought I''d ask the bright individuals here. I want to start my own
blog but I''m not sure where to begin. I don''t want to get a blogger
account because I want to have my own domain. Blogger also doesn''t
have many features. My hosting service is 1AND1 so it supports php,
cgi and mysql.
