Easiest way to deploy a ruby on rails site
Hi, i am looking to deploy a ruby on rails site. I currently have some asp.net 2.0 sites hosted using IIS. I have looked at some of the issues with hosting a rails site on IIS and this looks more hassle than what it is worth. I tried it and i couldn''t get it to work. Can someone tell me what is the easiest way to get a rubyonrails site up and running on a server running windows.

fun/flamebait: Java Web Devel Stacks
I''ll pose a question partly for fun, partly out of interest to see what everyone else is doing to survive the pain of the day job. It''s for the professional J2EE developer converts out there. Let''s say someone hired you to write a Basecamp clone, but it has to be done in Java, say on the Tomcat or JBoss platform. What does your stack look like now that you''ve

Creating a symbolic link within a Rails application?
Hi, how does one create a symbolic link within a Rails application? At this time, I can perform this action at the command line but I''m not sure how to do it within Rails. BTW, I''m doing the following command in Mac OS X: ln -s $SITE_ROOT/common_directory/* $SITE_ROOT/new_directory Thanks in advance, -Conrad -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was

Which mysql for a new project?
Hi all, I am about to start a new RoR project. Which version of mysql is the current best one to use? I will be using the soon-to-be-released RoR 1.0 for the project. I really don''t want to start a PostreSQL vs. MySQL vs. Whatever war. I have all databases including Oracle at my disposal. This project will be my testbed for using RoR with mysql. I will be doing other tests with other dbs

convert HTML to LaTeX or text
Hi all, I have a RoR app which can output a report in HTML back to the web browser, or (preferably) in PDF using the RTex plugin. I have a number of text fields which are stored as HTML, and am looking for a good way to convert them to something LaTeX-compatible, or plain text if that''s the last resort. I''ve seen a number of html2tex-type converters out there, but they are by

Agile Web Development book - version 4.0 released
I don''t know if I missed this on the list, but the Agile Web Development with Rails book is now at version 4.0, for those of us who bought the PDF from the Prag Prog site. Just a few typos and corrections from the looks of it, but can''t hurt to get the latest. You can reorder the book for download at: http://books.pragprog.com/titles/rails/reorder Cheers, Tom

ruby 1.8.2 or 1.8.3 on Linux?
I''ve seen some reports of problems with running Rails (version 1.0 here) on Ruby 1.8.3. Is this true across the board or just Mac OS? I''m setting up a Linux server and want to know if 1.8.3 is ok on that. Thanks, Jamie

Questions regarding architecture of a server-based image-processor deployed in ROR
Hello, I''m planning to deploy a hybrid 2D/3D visual fx and image manipulation engine as a server accessible via the Web. So you can send Flickr images to it for all manner of image trickery. My engine uses a little text-based language I devised that is parsed and a resultant image produced. The UI for this service collects the input image and associated params and passes the collection

An offer: R packages in Gentoo Land?
Greetings. I love R, we run Gentoo. I want to maintain R packages in the same methods I use for the rest of them; in Gentoo this is in "the portage tree", or in "a portage overlay". I am working towards something I consider suitable for production release, and wanted to ask if there are conventional blessings which I ought to ask of the R-devel folks; How does this usually

Mass mailing best practices
I''m building a feature for my app which allows the admin to compose an email and send it to a list of registered users (~1000). What is the best method for doing this? Should I create one email and BCC all the recipients? Is there a limit to how many recipients can be included in one email? or Should I send the same email to individual users? In the past I''ve had problems

Instant Rails 1.0 Final has been released!
This release is unchanged from release candidate 1 other than to update the version number in the Help>>About dialog. Instant Rails is a one-stop Rails runtime solution containing Ruby, Rails, Apache, and MySQL, all preconfigured and ready to run. No installer, you simply drop it into the directory of your choice and run it. It does not modify your system environment. This release of

Eleven??
...leven does, but for a beginner trying to put together a quick-and-dirty Intranet application, Eleven would be a good bit simpler, especially if the implementor was not a Ruby programmer. Do any of you see anything in Eleven that Rails can''t do easily? -- M. Edward (Ed) Borasky http://linuxcapacityplanning.com

Performance suggestions or best practices ideas?
Any suggestions on applications that involve alot of calcualtions on a fairly large data set? My app uses a set of raw data ~5k, applies some default/override rules on the raw data and does some calculations on the data in combination with a list of assumptions. A ranked list along with detailed metrics is generated. The end user can manipulate some of the rules and assumptions to generate

Announcement: Indexed Search Engine 0.1.2 Available
Hello all. Apologies... I was a little too eager in my earlier annoucement about the Indexed Search Engine for Rails apps. The DB migration file contained an error that had to be worked around. I''ve fixed that, added more (and clearer) documentation, and a sample application. You can find most everything you want to know about Indexed Search Engine here:

High performance queries - RoR, PHP or something else?
Hi everyone, I''m building an app in RoR that apart from the normal web interface has a web service. This web service takes a parameter and uses that in a single database query, and returns the result in a simple XML format. This web service needs to be quite fast as it will be used on all pages of a quite big site with thousands of visitors every hour. I don''t think caching is

Would you switch jobs for the chance to use Textmate?
Lets say you had a pretty decent job, but your company mandated use of emacs. The poaching employer offers you a free copy of Textmate(tm). Would you jump ship solely in order to use Textmate at company B? Cheers, Dave -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.

Poll: Which distro do you use for Rails/Ruby development?
Good afternoon, I''ve two quick questions for the Ruby/Rails community. 1) Do you use Linux for Ruby or Rails development? 2) If you use Linux, which distro do you normally use to develop? Thank you for your input. :-) -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.

Ruby, Rails & Linux - Which distro ??
Hi, I''ve been doing most of my initial playing with rails on a windows system - but wish to switch to a dedicated linux box for this. Are there any particular distro''s to avoid / recommend. I prefer debian for my other stuff, but thought i''d ask before going ahead. :) Cheers -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.
