problem with "winbind separator = \"
Hello, I just rebuilt the samba server that I was working on and when I try to add the line "winbind separator = \", testparm tells me that its value must be 1 character and then displays its value as the proceeding line. If I change the value to '+', it tells me that the value might cause a problem with groups memberships. If I just leave the value at '/' then it does

My new book: "The Complete April Fools RFCs"
Dear friends, I've published my 3rd book! "The Complete April Fools RFCs" by Thomas A. Limoncelli and Peter J. Salus http://www.rfc-humor.com This is a compilation of the best April Fools jokes created by the IETF, the group that creates the standards for how the Internet works. It's pretty technical but fun to read for anyone that is in software development, system administration, or an...

klist reports no tickets cached
Hi, I'm a newbie with Samba but believe me prior to posting to the list I have read almost everything out there and still don't get my issue solved. I have also re-installed Samba but still no luck. I have Samba 3.0.21b installed and had it working for a day. I've installed it using security = ads with winbind and everything was smooth except when I started configuring PAM so

Authentication problems with win2k3 domain controller
Hi I'm having problems with samba-3.0.21b and Windows Server 2003 domain controllers. When I try to access the samba server from a client (\\sambasrv) I only get a login prompt, no username/password combination works. Accessing the samba server through its IP-number instead of using the netbios name works. This together with the log message "Failed to verify incoming ticket!"

1 byte writes
After migrating a particular W2K file service to Samba 3.0.21c on SuSE 9.3 Pro (a DMS with winbindd against a W2K3 ADS), the W2K clients are suffering performance issues (in a switched LAN). Looking at the traffic with Ethereal (latest SVN), it looks like the client writes the data in *1 byte* pieces likes this (c=client, s=server): c->s NT Create AndX Request c<-s NT Create AndX

Name Change
I'm not sure where to put in my $.02 on this, but I think the best thing to do is pick a different name; I like "fresh". my $.02 of course, Mark

specifying groups: @ vs. +
In *non-NIS* environments: is there *any* difference in specifying @mygroup vs. +mygroup in smb.conf? smb.conf(5) from 3.0.21c says: A name starting with a '@' is interpreted as an NIS net- group first (if your system supports NIS), and then as a UNIX group if the name was not found in the NIS netgroup database. A name starting with '+' is interpreted only

"printer admin" still working in 3.0.21c?
While I'm able to successfully upload printer drivers with APW to my Samba 3.0.21c DMS server with CUPS, I have a hard time changing printer properties afterwards which always ends up with "access denied", although the AD account used to connect is listed in "[global] printer admin =". I noticed that "printer admin" is marked deprecated in 3.0.21c, but

3.0.21c safe_strcat string overflow w/ "net rpc share migrate files"
When migrating files off an existing Win2K file server using "net rpc share migrate files" with Samba 3.0.21c on SuSE 9.3 Pro I stumbled across a number of "string overflow by X in safe_strcat" errors on a few files with non-ASCII characters: myserver# net rpc share migrate files myshare --acls --attrs --timestamps -S win2k -U 'XXX\administrator'

beginner resources for CentOS
I'm looking for a good online (or even a good) "how to be a sysadmin" guide for beginners geared towards CentOS users. Does anyone have any suggestions? -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Local copying with minimal disk activity.
How do I minimize the amount of disk activity? I'm copying a large number of files: rsync -av -W /from/here/. /to/here/. I'm using rsync because I need the incremental updates and other features. Otherwise, I'd use tar piped to tar or some similar technique. Note: Both the source and destination are "local". Well, not really. The source is a network-mounted partition

Samba 3.0.21b winbind crash
I'm using Samba 3.0.21b on SuSE 9.3 Pro (x86) with the binary RPMs from samba.org/suse.com (3.0.21b-1.1.2-SUSE-SL9.3) on a Domain Member Server in ADS mode with winbind against W2K3 SP1 AD servers and idmap uids/gids stored in a central OpenLDAP directory. Unfortunately, winbind gives me a hard time and reproducibly dies with a PANIC on a "wbinfo -g", although I think I've

3.0.21c winbind crash
I'm using Samba 3.0.21c on SuSE 9.3 Pro (x86) with the binary RPMs from samba.org/suse.com (3.0.21c-2.1.2) on a Domain Member Server in ADS mode with winbind against W2K3 SP1 AD servers and idmap uids/gids stored in a central OpenLDAP directory. After running successfully for some time, it now refuses to start after a reboot. The domain-specific winbindd instances are even crashing. :-(

facter --yaml leaves some fields blank
Sometimes "facter --yaml" doesn''t list all the values specified on the command line. I can''t find rhyme nor reason why. Here''s a demo to show what I mean: # facter --version 1.5.7 # facter --yaml fqdn macaddress lsbdistcodename --- fqdn: my.host.name.example.com lsbdistcodename: squeeze macaddress: "00:00:00:00:00:00" We had been using the above

Using "ipset" under CentOS7
...that said, I suspect its deprecated in the new world of networkmanager and > firewalld. I think Don Quixote wrote firewalld. It takes everything that was wrong about iptables and amplifies them, meanwhile only fixing problems that don't exist. multiple winbind w/ common backend?
I'm successfully running multiple Samba 3.0.14a hosts as Domain Member Servers with winbind (default TDB backend) against a single AD domain. However, the Un*x uids and gids for the AD accounts are created by winbind as it comes across them, so they're not necessarily in sync between the Un*x hosts (although in the same configured range), thus violating good practise. Is there a way to

winbind, sIDHistory and getpwuid problems
In our native Win2K3 AD domain, several AD accounts have a sIDHistory that carry SIDs from before the AD domain migration in addition to the "primary" objectSID. Samba 3.0.21c winbindd (with idmap OpenLDAP backend) on domain member servers (running SuSE 9.3 Pro) allocates multiple uids for these SIDs with the same (AD) user name: Primary SID: # getent passwd myuser
