IAX Inbound Sound Quality
I have a couple of DID's through VP Connect and have been having sound
quality issues on incoming calls. During the call, the calling parties
voice sometimes sound like it is crackling, in other words it is not
very crisp. I would liken it to listening to a radio with a blown
speaker. This sound defect comes and goes throughout the call. The
other person is always audible but it just isn't as crisp and clear as
when I make outgoing calls over IAX. The other party does not hear any
audio defects.
Anybody have any suggestions o...

LVM, usb drives, Active Directory
I have a client with a handful of USB drives connected to a CentOS
box. I am charged with binding the USB drives together into a single
LVM for a cheap storage data pool (10 x 1 TB usb drives = 10 TB cheap
storage in a single mount point).
The next fun piece is how to incorporate that storage space into an
existing Active Directory structure to apply AD acls for limited
access.
I'd rather

Terminology
Hello folks,
I''ve blended/updated the Glossary of Terms
(<http://reductivelabs.com/trac/puppet/wiki/GlossaryOfTerms>). It seems
the definition of "manifests" is a bit different amongst members.
Some people consider a "manifest" to be a configuration file written in
puppet, e.g. any .pp file. But at my organization, we''ve considered the

default features
Hi
We are provisioning some default features to our customers like "automated answer when outside labor time", "rerouting when Subscriber Absent", and so.
These are macro calls embedded in key points inside the dialplan.
Since not all customers need/want all features and they (the features) are
customized, I named them like [macro-feature1-ClientA],
[macro-feature4-ClientF],

...? is done on pnwed hardware, much of which was compromised by previous botnets banging on weak SSH passwords.
Your freedom to use any password you like stops at the point where exercising that freedom creates a risk to other people?s machines.
In the previous thread on this topic, 6 months ago, I likened reasonable password strength minima to state-mandated vaccination. Previously-defeated diseases have started to reappear as the antivax movement has gained momentum. Polio came back in Pakistan, measles in California, and whooping cough in Australia, all within the last year or two.

Mongrel + Apache 1.3 + OpenBSD
Hello,
I want to install a bunch mongrel servers with an apache in fronthead,
all that on OpenBSD. But OpenBSD is released with a homemade Apache
1.3.29 patched by the OpenBSD team. I really want to keep this version
of apache and I don''t want to change it to Apache 2.x (because of the
security and the license but it''s not the point here). But for having
mongrel, it has to be

Re: [OT] FOSS or Freedomware? -- WAS: pronunciation/Red Hat
...icial acronym is Free and Open Source Software (FOSS).
But even before that acronym was popular, I had long argued that
Stallman's insistence on calling it "Free Software" when that could
be confused with "Freeware" or, worse yet, "Shareware" was a
disseervice. I liken that problem to people who like to use the
term "Hacker" in general, even though the original term was used
to designate someone of creative or other technical skill.
"Open Source" doesn't dictate that the source code is free of IP
either. And the whole term "open&quo...

status2.xsl info...
Quick thought, if the fields are separated by "," & a title/artist/.. has
a comma in it then it causes a few problems with parsing.
Likewise if there are multiple streams it might be nice to have each stream in it's own line so it is easier to grab the info.
Also, status.xsl displays streams even after they have been stopped.

IPv6 broken on Linode
https://forum.linode.com/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=14570&p=72785
I can not figure out what I need to do.
Apparently according to linode support, the VM is trying to grab an IPv6
address with some privacy stuff enabled by default causing it to not
grab the IPv6 address that is assigned to me.
Nothing I have tried seems to work, and it seems that Linode support are
far more familiar with

Vorbis for low bitrate speech (10-20kbps)
...have and probably had ample encoding headroom to be
perceptually transparent thanks to the 5.3 kHz frequency limit of the
original source and the total lack of stereo separation).
I've yet to upload that version to my website, since the quality of the 10.5
kbps version is still very good (I liken it to good AM radio) and it's half
the size, but as some people may want to listen to the speech again and
again, I might soon provide the alternative as the best available.
I'd suggest that various encoders (e.g. WinVorbis) may be improved by
including options, presets or wizards for e...

Re: Demonizing generic Linux issues as Fedora Core-only issues -- WAS: Hi, Bryan
...It is a necessary
evil that you must do -- and that will vary on the focus of the distro.
In fact, not doing configuration management in Linux roll-outs and,
essentially, _falsifying_ the savings on Linux with it, is the absolute
#1 reason why Linux projects fail.
Having a background in defense, I liken this to NASA's COTS (commercial
off-the-shelf) adoption in the '90s. After Sojouner (Mars Pathfinder)
proved that GNU/VxWorks was a viable platform that cost 1/10th of
custom software/hardware development, NASA's nexgen probes started
adopting the same platforms/software as Pathfinder....

Echo Cancelation on TE110P
On a 55 station install onto a Cox PRI with a TE110P (Polycom 501 phones) a
few users are complaiining about echo. According to the users, the echo
seems to be phone number dependant. They claim that certain phone numbers
have echo while others dont. Are there any tuning parametes like there is
for a TDM400 card?

EL 6 rollout strategies? (Scientific Linux)
I was wondering what feedback might be offered by the CentOS community on their
experiences using Scientific Linux?
I'm a long-time Centos user, and am basically happy with CentOS. I understand
there are delays getting EL 6 out. We have been long anxious to roll out EL 6
as soon as it's ready, but our time window for rollout is looming and we will
need to act. (for business reasons,

which webserver to use in production?
...y my hosting provider and I
need to tell them which webserver to use. The databse is MySQL btw.
Should it be Apache with FastCGI or lighttpd?
I''ve not idea yet on the number of users but if this took off then maybe
5000? Maybe I''ll need 10 boxes!!!
I suppose the best I could liken it to is Hotmail. So the question how
much gear will I need to support 5000 concurrent users?
Of course it could take 100 years to get to 5000 users in which case
I''ll need to think of something else for my pension!

Authenticating VPN addresses: a proposal
...the entire VPN, which
is a huge security risk. Possible threats of course include a node
getting compromised by outside attackers, but one should also consider
use cases where the legitimate owner of the node is not completely
trusted in the first place. Conceptually, the current situation could
be likened to an operating system that either give you root access, or
no access at all.
AVAILABLE SOLUTIONS FOR DEALING WITH NON-TRUSTED NODES
In this regard, tinc 1.1 improves on 1.0 by introducing end-to-end
security - relay nodes can't decrypt or forge SPTPS packets that pass
