isohybrid --uefi - resulting EF00 partition too small
...el and initramfs correctly results in a ISO image that is bootable on BIOS and UEFI systems if booted from the optical drive. However, when I run isohybrid --uefi name-of.iso the resulting GPT entry for the EF00 partition is just 19MB. It should be around 53MB: root at barium:/tmp# gdisk -l lesslinux-search-and-rescue-uluru-20130312-110347.iso GPT fdisk (gdisk) version 0.8.5 Partition table scan: MBR: MBR only BSD: not present APM: not present GPT: present Found valid MBR and GPT. USB boot problems on Gigabyte GA-M55Plus-S3G
Hi, > I have no reason whatsoecer to even vaguely > suspect that any of the various USB stick I have here are in any way > defective. Yeah. But can that "8GB Patriot" show the failure when you put one of originally failing systems onto it ? You mentioned Clonezilla, UBCD, OpenELEC. > Anyway, I did fetch the file [Ady's FAT32 image], > unzipped it, and then dd'd

...boards might fail if the C/H/S entries do not indicate a LBA medium. This would explain why all externally created images are booting, but those that were locally prepared on existing partition tables are failing. I would be personally interested in the following experiment: 1. Download this LessLinux test build: http://download.lesslinux.org/testing/lesslinux-search-and-rescue/lesslinux-search-and-rescue-uluru-20140107-193740.iso 2. dd it to the 8GB thumb that formerly failed 3. Boot it 4. Shut down 5. Boot again The ISO is a isohybrid image. But LessLinux converts the drive to a part...

I've never done I?C under linux, just playing around with it on Arduino... Don't hesitate to ask me for kexec-on-initramfs. Determine from which device syslinux booted from
Then again, I suppose you could have a script in your init that detects when it has been booted from a *special* UUID. In such cases it goes to the first instance of a volume with that *special* UUID and re-writes it to a genuine UUID, as well as updates the syslinux configs on the volume. You could then create your seed image with that *special* UUID and then even an XP user could write it to a

Advice/directions to users of Syslinux
...And it seems to me that the simplest way (from the point of view of the end user) to insure that these things are done correctly is for the distributors of tools such as Clonezilla, Ultimate Boot CD, and OpenELEC to follow in the footsteps of, e.g. the Archlinux folks and the Debian folks and the LessLinux folks i.e. by just simply distributing images that can be (no-brainer) block-by-block copied onto USB sticks in order to produce a working stick... using either dd or whatever the bleep its counterpart on Windows/DOS might be. In fact, the more I think about it, the more I think that it is rather...

Kernel selection by hardware?
Hello, is it possible to select the default boot image by hardware properties? I corrently boot a couple of laptops fom a single USB stick and I would like to select the default kernel image automatically. Is ifcpu.c32 or ifcpu64.c32 sufficient for your task? In LessLinux I use those to either boot a 64 bit kernel, a 32 bit kernel with PAE enables or a 32 bit kernel without PAE according to the features of the CPU. Even more (U)EFI questions
...EFI boot from USB works from a thumb drive that has a single FAT partition and that even might be bootable on BIOS. Just /efi/boot/bootx64.efi has to be present, EFI reads the FAT filesystem. However, not every UEFI implementation likes this setup. For those machines "my distribution" LessLinux partitions the thumb drive with a GPT partition table and a legacy boot partition and an UEFI boot partition (and several data partitions). Together with gptmbr.bin the thumb drive is bootable on BIOS and UEFI. A big advantage of this layout is that it can also be used on hard disks that can be...

I have not looked into it all that much. But seems that UEFI basically allows booting without a bootloader. Here is some gentoo wiki info in it: http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/EFI_stub_kernel And Greg Kroah-Hartman talking about it a bit: http://kroah.com/log/blog/2013/09/02/booting-a-self-signed-linux-kernel/ I am looking forward to making a little HOWTO, for this subject and also for using

I got this figured out much faster than I thought I would. Thanks to all of your help, Peter, Mattias, Thomas and Helmut. And Thomas, that 8 partition live OS sounds right up my alley, and I will definitely check it out. The second partition is working well with `parted' and `fdisk', so I am quite pleased. Below is, again, "what I came up with". I tried to integrate each of your
