tape-backup software (was: Very Large Filesystems)
Speaking of backup-software. I heard that legato supports zfs but is anyone using zfs and legato or some other backup-software that can handle multi-TB-file systems (in production)? -- regards Claus

snapshot of running vm's
...h SLES11 SP4 64bit. I use libvirt 1.2.5-7.1 . VM's are Windows 7, SLES, Ubuntu, Opensuse. I use raw files for the vm's. I try to orientate myself by http://wiki.libvirt.org/page/Live-disk-backup-with-active-blockcommit . The hosts are backuped every night by a network based backup solution (Legato). My idea is: - delete any existing snapshot - create a new snapshot - of course before Legato arrives - then Legato might come and saves my snapshot - next night the same Questions: When I delete a snapshot, is it merged automatically with its base image ? Or is it something I have to do explic...

Help with dump/restore
...n a scratch area so as to hopefully not overwrite current files. What is the proper procedure for dumping and restoring now? Should I be dumping to /dev/nst0/dump? What restore commands would I use to recall a file? I'd like to keep things as simple as possible - people have suggested legato and amanda, but for now, I would think/hope dump and restore would work. Thanks. Scott

sg device
...quot; device? The reason I ask, is that I have a file server running CentOS 4.2 on a Dell Precision 1650. Disks are attached via QLogic FC. I backup to a Qualstar TLS-4222 tape changer, with AIT-2 tapes, which is connected over an Adaptec 29160 Ultra 160 SCSI. The software I'm using is Legato Networker version 7.1.2. I'm backing up a bit under 1 TB a month with this. Quite frequently these days (meaning once a month or two), the Networker software loses the ability to control the tape changer. Mount, unmount commands just don't work any more. The only way I can seem to...

Turning off spell checker in TextCtrl
Hi, I''m running WxRuby2 on Mac OS X. Something is spell checking the text that I put into it; words it doesn''t recognize get an annoying red line under them. How can I turn the spell checker off? Thanks, Paul

Supporting ~10K users on ZFS
...re''s been some discussion on this before, but I''m not sure that any specific advice came out of it. What would the advice be for supporting a largish number of users (10,000 say) on a system that supports ZFS? We currently use vxfs and assign a user quota, and backups are done via Legato Networker. >From what little I currently understand, the general advice would seem to be to assign a filesystem to each user, and to set a quota on that. I can see this being OK for small numbers of users (up to 1000 maybe), but I can also see it being a bit tedious for larger numbers than that...

acts_as_xapian?
Anybody using Xapian with Ruby on Rails? If so, I'd like: a) Any advice on the state of the Ruby bindings. b) Even a skeletal version of acts_as_xapian - I'd be happy to help flesh it out, and test it. Francis

Lots of ERRbadfile and Expected SMBtrans2 responses with smbclient
...ing \GRE\texts-secure\d.txtt\* Is there a fix for this? My amanda logs that get e-mailed to me are 1.2 megabytes in size and filled with this kind of garbage. I don't think it's even backing up those files. As an aside, our older backup solution which is Sun's Solstice Backup v5.1 and Legato Networker (running on the windows clients) comaplains about the very same files with an "Unknown NT backup type 0x7" error. Any help would be greatly appreciated! The machine in question is running Windows 2000 Pro. Tom __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?...

RFE: using rsync as a backup tool (preserve access time & com press destination files) ?

Well, gnu tar provides a "--atime-preserve". All applications which backup filesystems (legato, quickrestore, budtools) preserve times on an application level. A backup tool is supposed to bypass normal filesystem access as it's supposed to be transparent. > Why not mount the filesystem on an alternate mountpoint, noatime or > readonly? On AIX, you can just mount the dir...

100GB incremental backups
...out 400GB of client's files on the server. Basically every Microsoft Windows user generated file (Word, Excel, whatever) of the entire University gets stored on my Samba server. Obviously backups are important. The Samba server is a Sunfire 280R and we use Sun's Solstice Backup (rebadged Legato Networker) and a Storagetek Timberwolf DLT tape jukebox to do backups every night. A full backup on Sat. nights and an incremental the other 6. Ok, now to the problem/question - lately we've been getting a lot of Huge incremental backups. I spent a great deal of my time yesterday digging int...

Tape operation
Hi all, My only encounter with tape-backup was with Windows 2000. With it, when we backup things using windows' backup tool, it will create a 'catalog', then the catalog contains all the backup operations we do based on date. So, with this we can "append" many backups into one tape. Next time we want to restore a backup, we can choose what date available in that
