I also tried --with-ldflags but couldn't specify a '-lcrypt' because configure recognizes this as an to its unknown option. hm. BTW: ./configure --help | grep ldlags (typo!) only supplying 'lcrypt' creates the same strange reaction as with '--with-libs crypt'.
