smbpasswd doesn't prompt root for password
...a on a MIPSEL system running
Linux 2.4.20 as root, I'm NEVER asked for a password. Even when I
create a new user in smbpasswd, I'm not asked:

Machine account LCT field not updated in smbpasswd 3.0.25c
Hello,
Since I migrated from Sparc Solaris/Samba 3.0.22 to Intel SLES 10/Samba
3.0.25c, after re-inserting a machine in the samba domain, the smbpasswd
LCT field is not any more updated.
Does any one have an idea on what's going wrong ?

Machine account LCT field not updated in smbpasswd 3.0.26a/Solaris
I posted a message some weeks ago with no answer about the problem that
after re-inserting a machine in the samba domain, the smbpasswd
LCT field is not any more updated.
- the machine NT password hash is updated but LCT no.
- this problem does not occur when updating a user password
- this problem does not seem to be OS dependent since the problem is the
same on Solaris and SLES (compiled by me with same options)

accounts disabled after 3.0.2 upgrade

Fedora Core updates (the ones from the Fedora team, not the ones on the
samba website) to update a samba PDC from 3.0.0.
As stated in the release notes for 3.02a (which I read on the samba
website):
Beginning with Samba 3.0.2, passwords for accounts with a last
change time (LCT-XXX in smbpasswd, sambaPwdLastSet attribute in
ldapsam, etc...) of zero (0) will be regarded as uninitialized
strings. This will cause authentication to fail for such
accounts. If you have valid passwords that meet this criteria,
you must update the last change time to a non-zero value.

open_sockets_smbd: accept: Software caused connection abort
Sorry if this is an FAQ...I have seen reports of this problem on several
mailing lists, but never a solution.
I have used Samba on Solaris for years, currently 2.2.1 on Solaris
9. Trying to upgrade to 3.0.6, with no luck on 2 different Solaris 9
systems. It compiles and installs OK, but clients can't connect. Not only
Win2k and XP PC's, but smbclient -L on the same machine

Encrypted passwords really necessary for PDC ?

/etc/passwd. Please note that this writes a samba-2.0 format smbpasswd
file.
This script will:

Machine account in smbpasswd is wrong

Samba also generates a machine account for samba (I could not find a line for that in my smb.conf)
But the generated account is not good it look like this

Two Windows users with two passwords must map to the same unix user

I can set up two instances of samba on the same machine with two
sets of config files, tdbs, ....
In instance 1 the smbpasswd file contains the password entry for joe:
joe:1000:xxxxxxxxxxxxPASS1xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx:xxxxxxxxxPASS1xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx:[UX ]:LCT-4B6836EF:
In instance 2 the smbpasswd file contains the password entry for jack
(but using joe as unix user):

and a user.map file containing
