Good wifi NIC?
Good morning, I'm looking for a good USB Wifi NIC that will work with the kernel modules for a stock CentOS 8.1. I have an ALFA AWUS036ACH NIC but it looks like the drivers need to compiler for the kernel and I'm having trouble with that. So I'd like something that works, but not necessarily high performing, so I can build the drivers for the ALFA NIC. Thanks! Jeff

Xen with Centos 4.3 - pointers?
Howdy, I'd like to play with Xen on top of a Centos 4.3 installation. I've been googling, but haven't found a nice comprehensive set of notes to get me started. I've looked at the XenSource site, a wiki site that tells you how to get CentOS working in a Xen shell (or whatever it's called). So, for a Xen newbie, does anyone have have any pointeds to notes, documentation,

Upgrading 5.5 to 5.8 with yum?
Good afternoon, I've been running a CentOS 5.5 system for a while using some Nvidia drivers for an older Nvidia card (GeForce 6200 card). I'd like to upgrade to 5.8 using yum but I was curious if anyone has done this using yum? Any gotchas? (I can handle the Nvidia upgrade part once the system is upgraded). Thanks! Jeff BTW - I'm using driver 256.35 and looking at Nvidia's

Installing Centos4.3 in VMWare on XP
Evening everyone, I'm trying to install Centos 4.3 in VMWare Workstation running on Windows XP (my laptop). I downloaded the CD iso's to my Linux box and burned them (I did them correctly since last time I screwed them up). However, when I start the VM in VMWare, it says the CD isn't bootable. Any ideas? Thanks! Jeff

Low-memory Centos5?
Good morning, I've inherited an old laptop from my wife that I'd like to use when I travel (it's fairly small with a 12" screen). The bad part is that it is maxed out on memory with 384MB. Has anyone played with using Centos5 on systems with little memory? Ideally, I don't need too much - Firefox, Openoffice, a little Perl/Python/C here and there. I was thinking about using

CentOS 7.2 and KDE
Good afternoon, I apologize if this is off-topic. I just installed CentOS 7 on my laptop and I used KDE. I can't seem to get the "hibernate" option. I've tried editing the options under "Power" but it hasn't appeared. Any thoughts? Thanks! Jeff

Best laptop with NVIDIA graphics
Good afternoon, I've been using CentOS for many, many years. I'm looking for a good laptop with 4 cores that has an NVIDIA GPU with dedicated memory. I'd prefer a GTX 10** series but the older 9** series is fine. Any recommendations? Thanks! Jeff

Apologies - possible hardware problem?
Thanks everyone for the help! I'm still struggling to get it working. I think I will have to go back and start simple: (1) one DIMM, (2) New PS, (3) maybe new MB (I can't ever access the BIOS any more). Jeff On Mon, Nov 16, 2020 at 9:54 AM Jos? Multiple sound cards
Afternoon, I recently upgraded a machine to CentOS 4.0 and it has two sound cards: built-in VIA, Cmedia PCI card. The OS recognizes both and I can use the tool, system-config-soundcard to test them. However, I can't seem to get any sound out of the VIA card, but the Cmedia plays the test sound just fine. The problem is that I can't get any sound apps to use the Cmedia card,

Problem booting 2.6.30-rc5 kernel
Good morning! I know I'm on the bleeding edge, but I'm having trouble getting the 2.6.30-rc5 kernel to boot on my CentOS 5.3 box. It's a dual-socket Nehalem box with the Tylersburg chipset (Supermicro board). I installed CentOS 5.3 on it with no problems - boots and runs fine. But I wanted to take a look at the 2.6.30-rc5 kernel and try out some new stuff. After a few go around's

OT: Quick ext3 command
Hello, Sorry for the off-topic, but I've just installed CentOS 5 on my home box and I want to put the journal on another drive. I created a software RAID-1 device, /dev/md1, and formatted an ext3 file system on it. Now I want to move the journal to /dev/hda5. I've googled for this and the process appears to be: mkfs.ext3 -b 4096 -O journal_dev /dev/hda5 mkfs.ext3 -b 4096 -J

CentOS 6.4: sound not working
Good morning, I've got a new system with a fresh 6.4 installation. I didn't check if the sound worked at first but I know it doesn't now. :) The system board is an ASRock Extreme6. The Specs say it has a Realtek ALC1150 audio chipset and 7.1 channels. I'm running KDE and an Nvidia X driver (I need the video performance of this driver - sorry about that). The System Tools for
