Ruby on Rails install problem in Linux Mint - please help a newbie

I have just started to study Ruby on Rails, downloaded Ruby 1.8.7, and
compiled it from source, RubyGems 1.3.6, and ran "ruby setup.rb", and
installed Rails by "sudo gem install rails"
