disk mounting madness
...s by their labels.
Nor can a "mount -a" command; it says it can't find the info in fstab
(though it _is_ there).
But long version mount commands work.
And when I redo the fstab file to list the devices rather than labels,
everything mounts as it should.
Any ideas?

...from the
working machine and installing the contents on the /boot partition on
the local machine.
Same problem.
I was supposed to get this server into the data center; it's now 02:19.
I'm going home to get a few hours sleep.
Any suggestions?
Help appreciated.
Thanks.

Automated YUM update kills DNS
...pdated, but only two of them did the rewrite.
Any ideas as to why it might have happed, or how to make sure it doesn't
happen again?
Hopefully nothing so simplistic as "exclude bind from auto updates"
though if that's the only answer, we'll take it.
Thanks.

On this one we're using (trying to use is a better statement of what
we're going through) the default daemon, /usr/sbin/vsftpd.

Yum problem CentOS 3.3?
...ay''s delay in our trip to the datacenter
<frown>.
This is our baseurl line for each section; it''s the default:
baseurl=http://mirror.centos.org/centos-3/$releasever/os/$basearch/
Should I be adding additional lines?
If so, where do I find the list?
Thanks.

So I try yum update httpd and get the same error message.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

problems with greylistd
...Starting greylistd: [FAILED]

</snip>
The message in /var/log/messages is decidedly unhelpful; all it tells me
is that the program started and then stopped:
<snip>
Dec 31 19:43:53 da12 su(pam_unix)[11890]: session opened for user
greylistd by jlasman(uid=0)
Dec 31 19:43:53 da12 su(pam_unix)[11890]: session closed for user
greylistd
Dec 31 19:43:55 da12 greylistd: greylistd startup failed

Any ideas as to what may be going on? Or where I should look?
Or if there's easily installable source-code available?
Thanks.

Website running slow and Timing Out, but at random...
I have a site running the current version of Centos 4.2, it has a
shopping cart running on it and runs slow and times out at random. The
cart is a simple php package using a MySQL database backend.
Can any one think of ways to improve the speed in MySQL and Apache, I've
had the cart checked by the software vendor, it's working like it
should, they are pointing to MySQL or Apache and

Looking for server recommendations
We're going to replace an older Solaris7/Netbackup/TapeRobot server with
a new Centos box using backup-to-disk-to-tape (probably using Arkeia).
The specs are up in the air, but generally:
- CentOS/RHEL friendly (3Ware SATA? SCSI?)
- 2U/3U/4U-ish form factor
- hotswap RAID5
- dual PS, hotswap a plus
- USB2.0 port(s) (*)
To give you an idea of where I'm starting to look, take a gander at

Sendmail vs. Postfix
Hah!!! This list is just too calm and mundane. The only thing we argue
about is the ''announce'' list vs. the ''user'' list. ;) So, it''s
springtime! I''m seeing all the regularly scheduled ''oil'' threads on my
motorcycle lists and thought "oh what the heck, lets get the ''oil''

Upgrading Server Motherboard
I have a server running CentOS 4.2 that works as a web/email with very
heavy load. It runs Directadmin web gui which is like Cpanel. It
runs on a cheapy mATX motherboard(ECS 741GX-M) with socket A 2800+ CPU
and 2Gbyte DDR. The OS and data are on a 300Gbyte PATA maxtor drive
and data backups are run weekly to another PATA drive. The server is
overwelmed and data backups take over 5 hours to

CentOS for commercial use
I'm a home user of CentOS (a desktop and a laptop) because I like the
quality of the product and I love the cost. I'm a great believer in
FOSS.
That being said, I know that some of you use CentOS for production
servers and (perhaps?) desktops as well. I've read at leat one comment
like "I have 20 CentOS servers."
My employer is a firm believer in RHEL - license costs are
