Ubu edgy + latest CRAN R + Rmpi = no go
I'm just curious if anyone else has had problems with this
configuration. I added the CRAN repository to apt and installed 2.5.0
with apt-get. I then did an install.packages("Rmpi") on cluster nodes.
Rmpi loads and lamhosts() shows the nodes, but mpi.spawn.Rslaves()
fails (something to do with temp files?). Rmpi works fine with the
Edgy-native version of R (2.3.x) and installing Edgy's r-cran-rmpi
with apt. (But I need some other packages that only work in 2.4+!)
Could this be a problem with the latest Ubu debs o...

Rmpi : openmpi and mpi.spawn.Rslaves
...han all piling onto the same nodes (on the server). Some very crude experiments in snow imply that slave processes might well be getting passed on to separate nodes beyond the server.
However, it's a little harder convincing myself which nodes are doing what. When looking directly in Rmpi, lamhosts() reports all the hosts correctly, unfortunately mpi.universe.size reports 1 node (I think this is as documented). More importantly, I have the issue with mpi.spawn.Rslaves() freezing. This has been mentioned before:

Snow Rmpi Heterogeneous Cluster
...ing on an heterogenous cluster of
linux computers. The master computer is built on a 64 bit architecture
whereas all nodes are built on a 32 bit architecture. LAM/MPI was
installed successfully on all machine. LAM boots correctly on the master
computer and it recognizes all nodes defined in the lamhosts file.
However, when starting R, launching the 'snow' package and making a
cluster including several nodes, everything is blocked. It seems that
Rmpi cannot be started in the nodes which have a different architecture.
I have to do 'lamhalt' on the first node of the cluster so th...
