sshd didn't run after upgrade to FreeBSD 8.4
...ult text appended to
SSH protocol banner (for example 'FreeBSD-20120901').
On FreeBSD 8.4, there must be some string (any single character)
I was really badly surprised that the machine was re-booted without ssh
access!
I think this change is worth to mention in Release Notes

bsnmpd always died on HDD detach
...channel
(eg.: disc physically removed) the bsnmpd always dumps core:
kernel: pid 1188 (bsnmpd), uid 0: exited on signal 11 (core dumped)
I see this for a long rime on all releases of 7.x and 8.x branches (i386
and amd64). I did not tested 9.x.
Is it a known bug, or should I file PR?

what hardware parts are supported by FreeBSD and what not.
I am running FreeBSD for about 13 years on servers.
I didn't run it on desktop grade HW for more than 8 years. So any tips
for some solid home PC with i7-4770 (or i7-3770?) is appreciated. :)

Intel ICH7 SMBus support, ichsmb(4)
Hi there,
I have been looking at a system which has the Intel ICH7 south bridge.
Whenever I try to probe the SMBus on this system with 'smbmsg -p', I get
a lot of status=41 timeout messages in dmesg from the ichsmb(4) driver.
I have been given the addresses of the SMBus peripherals and have tried
initiating reads to their register space directly using 'smbmsg', with
the same

Will it not be maintainer's nightmare to take care of all the
dependencies on the base packages for each port we have in the ports tree?

Jail resource limits
http://wiki.freebsd.org/JailResourceLimits
Is this anthing people are working on? Is it on its way to RELENG_7?
Is there a 7-version of the patch or anything? This would be a _VERY_
useful feature.

That does entirely solve the problem of being able to reinstall sendmail after the fact without a rebuild of the userland (base) port but perhaps base flavors could solve that problem assuming flavors could extend beyond python.

Apart that this is not 'NIS', but a draft (and expired) schema used in
OpenLDAP for email routing:
https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-lachman-laser-ldap-mail-routing-02
And apart that i'm using it in 'custom' OU created in AD, not on
preexistent ones, can be added and work. I use it. ;-)
I've simply created OU like:
CN=Aliases,OU=FVG,DC=ad,DC=fvg,DC=lnf,DC=it
and clearly modify my application to use them.

sysctl maxfiles
By default FreeBSD 7.0 shipped with the sysctls set to:
kern.maxfiles: 12328
kern.maxfilesperproc: 11095
We recently bumped up against these limits in an unfortunate way and
we are going to raise them. I have some questions:
* why are the numbers set the way they are? They aren't round numbers,
they aren't powers of 2. But they were arrived at somehow with
planning and thought

Ok, so I ran fsck manually (even with -y), but yet it refuses to clear/fix
whatever to the questions posed as fsck runs. What does this all mean?
Thanks,

A simple rc.d jail patch to enable priority
Hello,
I have written this tiny little patch to the jail rc.d script, which
allows user to set jail nice value. It doesn't change any default
behaviour.
Can that make it to the trees?
Patch attached.

I added misc.schema to samba LDAP implementation, then I tried to insert this:
