L4D crashes reaching in-game, d3d_shader bug maybe?
...e related problem.
I am using an original version of Left 4 Dead and Steam runs fine.
I also tried running HL2 Deathmatch with this version of Wine and it actually runs compared to v1.0 (in my experience) but the characters are deformed (polygons stretched beyond the map), maybe this co relates to L4D above?
I only mentioned HL2's problem as it may provide a solution someone already knows to the problem I'm having with Left 4 Dead.
Any possible help is appreciated, and yes I have referenced the AppDB and quite a few have gotten the game running (especially with Wine 1.1.17).

Code:
$ wine start SteamInstall.msi

Application could not be started, or no application associated with the specified file.

Or by running outside terminal, I get the wine error dialog "Success" with the red circle next to it and a little OK under it.

Valve Source games display problem
I'm hoping someone can help me figure this problem out. It's been bugginng me for quite a while. First, basic specs:
8.04 Kubuntu
x86 64 bit system.
Nvidia 9600 GT video card
2GB RAM
Wine version 1.1.10
I've been running wine for several years, so it's distinctly possible that I've got some leftover configuration information that's messing me up. I've tried

I've tried it in KDE with compositing off or on. My preferred method of gaming is running a separate X server on DISPLAY :1 by putting the above WINEPREFIX command in a script name l4d.wine, then making another script:
xinit /home/l33/scripts/l4d.wine -- :1
My openGL performance is decent in the unigine heaven benchmark, so I know my drivers are working to some degree...just not in DirectX.
I have the latest Catalyst 9.7 fglrx with a 4870X2 in Arch Linux x86_64.

(Some) HL2 games won't start but HL2 will.
...e new monitor is 1920x1080.
As noted in the title, Half-Life 2 starts and runs beautifully with all settings maxed out. Half-Life itself and all HL mods seems to be running fine. I've successfully HL2, tested HL, CS, TFC, and DoD.
The games that I'm having trouble with are; CS:S, DoD:S, L4D, L4D2, and TF2. All of them exhibit essentially the same symptoms. I've concentrated on DoD:S as that is my favorite game of the bunch. All of the HL2 based mods all fail with similar symptoms.
If (a) I start DoD:S from the command line, (b) let it run for several minutes, then (c) shut it...
