Icecast, Liveice... experiences?
...nd serve content.
But now it is making IceCast unstable. I first hit problems when
decreasing the bitrate to 16000 and the sample rate to 11025. I tried to
move things back up, but it seems to be completley unstable and a mess.
Does anyone have suggestions? By leaving LAME and trying to go with L3ENC
or whatever the current version is -- will that improve stability? Anyone
have any tips? I really don't want to go the Windows route -- but I don't
want to babysit the stuff either. LiveIce seems like an okay application

Why Point-Stereo at 160 kbps ?
...q5
I know, we're usually unable to percieve those
phase correlations above 10 kHz, But a
Dolby Prologic Decoder isn't.
I think a future version of OggEnc which is able
to use a user-selectable stereo mode would be graet.
I think back to the time, where everyone just
realized that the old L3ENC destroyed
phase correlations using intensity stereo and thus
being unable to handle dolby surround effects
correctly.
Most people switched to "Pure"-stereo hoping to get
a better sounding file...
And as a Ogg/Vorbis fan...
i don't want its reputation to be harmed.
;-)
thanks and bye...

FreeBSD in general
...terms of CPU and memory usage: from 0.8 - 2 % CPU time and
about 4MB of resident memory. I even "renice -10" it at the suggestion of
someone else on this list. Lame (or another encoder) will be by far the
biggest CPU consumer.
One of the downsides of FreeBSD is that Fraunhofer's l3enc and mp3enc
encoders are not supported on it (although you could probably run the Linux
binary in compatibility mode). So lame is really your only choice for an
encoder, as far as I can tell. Which isn't bad--the quality sounds as good
to my ear at the low bitrates we use (and often better...

One more for Darkice here. My experiences with LiveIce were less than
fruitful. I used to use the shoutcast plugin on windows but, like you,
Unix is my friend. I tried to use LiveIce, but the _exit/exit problem
prevented initi...

For Alpha software Ogg/Vorbis is great.
OGG size is comparable to MP3 size (will this improve?),
OGG encode speed is comparable to l3enc and will most likely improve
with time (after all lame wasn't developed in 24 hours).
But the playback CPU usage is what is not 'nice'. There I think is
a problem as ogg123 needs 3x more CPU power to decode
than mpg123. But I hope this will also change with further development.

Transcoding listening test
...mples, because doing the tests was
rather slow given the equipment and hardly pleasant.
Each time I ABX'ed the decoded mp3 versus the decoded
mp3->encoded ogg->decoded ogg. I was effectively listening
to the transcoding artifacts only.
First sample, part of remix of 'Stardust', l3enc(FhG) at
128kbps original, only drum/bass with some effects, resulting
ogg was 125kbps (very easy, mp3 is probably transparent
already)
I could not reliably hear any differences between the mp3
and the transcoded ogg. (I could when I turned off the
airconditioning)
Second sample, part of 'Fir...

FreeBSD in general
Hello everyone,
I am very tempted to try and use icecast as the weapon of choice
to realize a live audio stream for the radio station I work for.
Now, the last time I tried the FreeBSD port of Icecast, it
immediately consumed something like 95% CPU time, even without
any client connected. I think someone else reported that
problem, but I somehow lost track of the issue - has this been
