firefox and D state
Previously when firefox went catatonic to the point that I could not even scroll, its CPU usage had gone to 100%+. Now top tells me that firefox, Web Content (with a space) or sometimes kswap... has process state D, uninterruptable sleep. Any suggestions on how to deal? I often have a lot of tabs open, so discovering the right one was hard enough before. Usually, it was something relatively new, so that helped. Not so much anymore. I think a lot of it is just waiting (D) for ads or ru...

kernel and memory question
...but when a user does a large operation such as 'cp' or 'tar' or 'rsync' all of the physical memory gets exhausted. Our lab servers have 32GB physical to 64GB of physical memory and when a user does a large copy which involves very small but over 10k files eventually we see a kswap process. I would like to control swapping so these files don't go into memory instead they get flushed out. These computers are used for fluid dynamics calculations and I would just like to have the memory do a FIFO and use the least swap as possible. I tried setting the swapiness to '10...

Strange occurrence
You mentioned that your systems are running Fedora Core. At 4:00 every morning cron runs the updatedb script to update the locate database. That script looks for files on all local files systems on the machine. When it does this it causes starvation of memory so the kswap process activates, while that process is looking for candidates to move to swap space your regular user processes will observe stalls, frequently on the order of 4 to 15 seconds. This may happen many times during the run of the updatedb script. When I'm up late hacking I always end up taking a...

If an outage is detected, the system attempts a reconnect immediately. If a reconnect is established but is lost again without a full minute of audio, I don't log it as a reconnect. Once a reconnect is

Xen status in lenny?
Hi, AFAIK, the status of Xen in lenny is currently the following: - no dom0 kernel - domU kernel only for i386 (no domU kernel for amd64) I was told (I don't remember where) that this is because the vanilla kernel only supports domU for i386, and has no dom0 support, so distros have to port the patches to their kernels (please correct me if I'm wrong). However: - etch shipped with dom0
