installing extlinux on a fresh system. Why does it fail ?
Thanks I let GParted create the file system. It was done on a rescue disk of Ubuntu 12.04 (GParted 0.11.0) I think that the problem is in my command line. Determine from which device syslinux booted from
The RAW nature of Disk Imager fails to leverage the unique intentions of UUID to surmount the problems of multiple bootable drives in the same system for purposes of knowing which one you actually booted from and should continue to use. Determine from which device syslinux booted from
Then again, I suppose you could have a script in your init that detects when it has been booted from a *special* UUID. In such cases it goes to the first instance of a volume with that *special* UUID and re-writes it to a genuine UUID, as well as updates the syslinux configs on the volume. You could then create your seed image with that *special* UUID and then even an XP user could write it to a

Some (U)EFI questions
Hi everyone, for UEFI bootable media I currently use preloader+gummiboot while on BIOS media I use isolinux/extlinux. Since maintaining two configurations is some kind of extra work, I plan switching to syslinux in the next weeks or months. Creating an UEFI boot partition or El-Torito image seems easy: Use preloader, hashtool and the syslinux efi file, copy them to the FAT image and be

Freebsd + NT/Nt-Client am Linux-Server
Pam_SMB allows Linux clients to validate their passwords against an NT PDC, so the only thing you have to do is set up the accounts on the Linux side with an '*' in the /etc/passwd entry. This can be done using a list of users: #!/bin/bash for i in `cat myuserlist`; do /usr/sbin/adduser -p '*' $i with various other command line options, such as "-s

installing extlinux on a fresh system. Why does it fail ?
Hi All, I am trying to install extlinux on a fresh system. Here are my steps : ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ A) Create an ext2 partition. I did the following steps : 1) boot from CD 2) Activate GParted 3) Create Partition table on the "fresh disk" (/dev/sda). 4) Create 1 ext2 partition (and mark its flag as "boot"). B)mkdir /mnt/Ext2_partition C) mount /dev/sda1

NT3.51 slow file access
Hi: We have a network of Unix (Solaris 2.6) and windows 95 machines. We currently run samba v1.9.18p10 on one of the unix machines to share user's home directories, and a common directory for projects (/doc). Our Win95 machines work fine when it comes to accessing the unix machine's data. We recently added an NT 3.51 machine (running Citrix WinFrame, fyi) to the network. Using the

isohybrid --uefi - resulting EF00 partition too small
Hello everyone, I am maintaining a distribution loosely based on LFS and am now trying to add UEFI support. Integrating a FAT formatted partition image containing, preloader, gummiboot, kernel and initramfs correctly results in a ISO image that is bootable on BIOS and UEFI systems if booted from the optical drive. However, when I run isohybrid --uefi name-of.iso the resulting GPT entry for

casper-rw and PXE
Hallo, syslinux, I'm working with an USB stick and an *.iso image. On an USB stick I can use "casper-rw" and "home-rw" for persistent directories/files. Under PXE I haven't yet found a similar option. Is that a syslinux-/pxelinux problem, or is that a "casper" problem? Example: USB stick, part of "isolinux.cfg": label desinfect menu label
