Math expression with object to evaluate
Hello. I have a question that probably has a simple answer. I have a loop where several figures are plotted with each iteration. I calculate some descriptives to put in the title of the figure. When I use expression, since I want to combine math plotting symbols and the descriptives I calculate, I get an error. Here is an example of the code that I tried: plot(x,y,

Making a Package
Hello. I have what I know to be a simple question, but never having done anything like this it is pretty tough. I'm trying to write an R package. I have a collection of functions that I loaded into R and then used package.skeleton(). After editing everything in the resulting folder, call it NewPackage, I tried to follow along with some instructions I found for Windows users. I installed

A Few MCLUST Questions
Hello everyone. I have a few MCLUST questions and I was hoping someone could help me out. If you’re an MCLUST user, they will likely be pretty easy to answer. Thanks in advance for any help. Ken What are the pros/cons of starting a finite mixture model at the “m” step versus the “e” step (where “m” is the maximization step and “e” is the expectation step of the EM algorithm)? In

Aliases for arguments in a function
Hi all. I have a function that I would like to use either the argument name as originally defined or another name. Within the function (and other functions) use the argument name as originally written, so I don't want to simply remove the old argument name for the new one, but simply allow the function to treat both argument names as equivalent. Here is an example: foo <-

nlme questions (e.g., specifying group membership, changing options)
I'm trying to better understand the nlme package and have a few questions. 1.) Other than using various coding strategies (e.g., dummy coding, effect coding), is there a way to identify group membership (i.e., treatment) directly? For example, the following code will fit a two group logistic growth curve (where 'Score' is repeatedly measured over 'Time' for each of the

Ideal Computer and Software (A bit off topic)
Hello everyone. This question might be a bit off topic, but I thought that (a) there couldn't be a better group to address my questions and (b) that others might find it useful too; It also might start an interesting discussion thread. I use R often for simulation purposes (which generally involve a lot of for() loops) and for most of my general work. I will be purchasing a new computing

nlme parameters in nlmeControl
Hello all. I'm doing a simulation study where I will be making use of the 'nlme' package. I want to loosen up the convergence criteria so that I increase the likelihood of convergence (potentially at the cost of obtaining slightly less than ideal results). The parameters in the function nlmeControl() control the convergence criteria. These default values can be modified to make

MCLUST Covariance Parameterization.
Hello all (especially MCLUS users). I'm trying to make use of the MCLUST package by C. Fraley and A. Raftery. My problem is trying to figure out how the (model) identifier (e.g, EII, VII, VVI, etc.) relates to the covariance matrix. The parameterization of the covariance matrix makes use of the method of decomposition in Banfield and Rraftery (1993) and Fraley and Raftery (2002) where

Problem with a while loop embedded in a function.
Hello all. I have been working on a (fairly simple) function for way too long. I’ve really hit a wall and I was hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction. I have (attempted) to create a function that has an embedded while loop. The while loop works fine by itself, however, when the while loop is embedded in the function, the function fails. I’m not sure why this

NLME: Holding constant the across group correlational structure of the fixed effects in nlme
Hello all. I was wondering if there is a way to hold constant the fixed effects correlation structure across multiple groups? For example, I have two groups and I fit a three parameter logistic growth curve where the fixed effects are free to vary across the groups. I'll paste in the code as a concrete example: > Result.NLME <- nlme(Score ~ SSlogis(Time, Asym, xmid, scal), +

Plotting groupedData objects
Hi all. I have what I'm guessing is a fairly easy question. I want to plot groupedData objects, but there are a large number of subjects in my data. When I use the simple command plot(MyData) where MyData is a groupedData object, there are simply too many individual plots to see anything. I would like, say, 15 per page and for the plots to cover multiple pages. All of the individuals have a
