Data corruption on external hard disk
...n I was performing this, it was a very hot day, almost 40?C. The disk was really very hot, so I wonder if this might have damaged it. I could retrieve some of the data on the disk (music, pictures, documents), but now, instead of the Cinema/ directory, I have one big file that looks like this: [kikinovak at buzz:/media/disk/Films] $ ls -l total 692996 -rw-r----- 1 678756852 34537972 148381783526817280 avr 28 01:01 Cinema drwxr-xr-x 3 kikinovak kikinovak 4096 mai 9 10:07 Anime drwxrwxrwx 4 kikinovak kikinovak 4096 mai 10 12:25 Series Notice that the file size is someth...

Problems with UserDir directive on CentOS 5
...from the out-of-the-box configuration of Apache, I test it, and it's OK: http://localhost shows Apache's default page OK in Firefox. Now I edit /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf and replace 'UserDir disabled' by 'UserDir public_html'. I restart Apache. Then, as a normal user (kikinovak): $ cd $ mkdir public_html I edit a basic index.html file, then put it into this directory. I open Firefox at http://localhost/~kikinovak/ ... and I get the following error message: Forbidden You don't have permission to access /~kikinovak/ on this server. Apache/2.2.3 (CentOS) Server at...

Apache: confusion about virtual hosts and DNS on a local network
....local), and every machine is pingable by its hostname. The webserver runs on the machine 'buildbox'. The webserver actually has two (static) websites on it, for testing and fiddling purposes. Each site's pages are stored respectively under /var/www/html/microlinux and /var/www/html/kikinovak. I can reach the two websites from any machine on the local network by opening a web browser at http://buildbox/microlinux/ or http://buildbox.presbytere.local/microlinux/ for the first website, and http://buildbox/kikinovak resp. http://buildbox.presbytere.local/kikinovak for the second websi...

Very weird problem with handling symbolic links

adduser vs. useradd
...o 'useradd'. But when I add a new user (# adduser newuser), I don't use any switches, say to specify the shell, the home directory, the password expiration delay, etcetera. I understand that it is Red Hat (CentOS) tradition to create a separate group for each user. For example, user kikinovak also belongs to a group kikinovak. And when I create a new user 'newuser', the 'newuser' group also got somehow created. Plus, the new user also seems to have his own user profile, with a default .bashrc and so on. My only explanation for that is that CentOS' 'useradd...

Hi again & problem with minimal CentOS and Github
...ot; after the initial installation. I installed Git and Vim and cloned my Github repository for CentOS. But when I make a modification and want to push it to Github, I get the following error: # git push error: The requested URL returned error: 403 Forbidden while accessing https://github.com/kikinovak/centos/info/refs fatal: HTTP request failed Now I think there must be some missing component in my CentOS installation, because my Slackware workstation in the same network can push things just fine. Any idea what's missing here? Cheers from the flooded South of France, Niki -- Microlinu...

Broadcom wireless card: installation script for Linux-STA driver
Hi, I just installed CentOS 6.6 on my HP Pavilion DM1 laptop. The wireless card is only poorly supported in the default setup, so I decided to write an installation script for the Linux-STA driver, which works perfectly. https://github.com/kikinovak/centos/blob/master/6.x/broadcom-sta/broadcom-sta.sh Grab the files: # git clone https://github.com/kikinovak/centos Run the script: # cd centos/6.x/broadcom-sta # broadcom-sta.sh Reboot and you're ready to go. Changing hostname?
Hi, I recently made a CentOS install on a machine with an unsupported network card. I had to add the driver for it later, once I finished the install. For now I have this: [kikinovak at localhost ~]$ hostname --fqdn localhost.localdomain Q: how would I change this to something like calimero.local? Here's what I *would* do, but I prefer to ask before. 1) edit /etc/sysconfig/network and edit this line: HOSTNAME=calimero.local 2) add a line to /etc/hosts like this: # Do...

SSH without password on CentOS 5 ?
Hi, I'd like to use SSH without password so I can use it in scripts (for example in combination with rsync to do backups). I have Carla Schroder's "Linux Cookbook" and I'm trying out the various receipts, but the one for SSH without a password doesn't work. The book is slightly dated, and I wonder if SSH included in CentOS works differently. Any suggestions? Niki

Best way to configure proprietary NVidia driver on CentOS ?
...idia packages look a bit like a mess. DKMS has errors in the startup script (looking for a nonexistent log_action_msg and the likes), so I wonder if it's best to just download the driver from nvidia.com and build it myself. Then I thought : I'd rather ask. Cheers, Niki -- http://www.kikinovak.net
