Encrypted File Storage
...needs to be accessed and have scripts executed/data generated, it needs to be untarred/unencrypted and I don't know the ramifications of this wrt recovery once its retarred and deleted. I was hoping it could be stored somehow such that it was decrypted on the fly when needed by entering a pass/keyphrase before use. Thus it could be backed up and remain encrypted. Is dm-crypt the simplest option here? None of our servers have a gui. Thanks! jlc

extracting values from txt file that follow user-supplied quote
...ading the file twice (first to get num_lines, then to step through each line looking for the desired text). Is there a way to speed this process up through the use of a ?scan ? I wan't able to get anything working, but what I had in mind was scan through the more than 1Gb file and when the keyphrase (e.g. " PERCENT DISCREPANCY = ") is encountered, read and store the next 13 characters (which will include some white spaces) as a numeric value, then resume the scan until the key phrase is encountered again and repeat until the end-of-the-file marker is encountered. It is important to have your keywords appear in the text on your page, but sometimes you can go a little overboard in your enthusiasm to please those spiders. A search engine uses what is called "Keyphrase Density" to determine if a site is trying to artificially boost their ranking. This is the ratio of keywords to the rest of the words on the page. Search engines assign a limit to the number of times you can use a keyword before it decides you have overdone it and penalizes your site. This ra...

Q: Timing of render :update in an action ?
...can set me straight with a solution to an issue that has come up involving the timing of rendered page elements in relation to the completion of an action''s execution. I have an ror search app which searches through two tables consisting of 7,000 page urls and a table w/ 87,000 related keyphrases within those pages. Search results can take anywhere from 2 seconds to 5-8 seconds to be displayed so I am trying to break the process up so a loading/progress mesg can be displayed using Ajax and the following logic-flow.
