...I would like to annotate a graph with the expression 'alpha = 5%' (the

I tried

escaping the percent sign (\%) or doubling (%%) does not help.
What do I do?

(And as an aside, who remembers when moving even from, say, a 1.2 to a

can go from a 2.6 to a 3.11 kernel in less than ten minutes!)

I don't understand par() well enough to know what to change. I figured
changing the numbers after "usr" might help but I don't understand
what these numbers refer to and guess and check hasn't gotten me
anywhere.

...ot;xenial-cran35/r-cran-rpart_4.1-13-1cran1xenial0_amd64.deb". No other version of rpart is installed. It seems that this Ubuntu Xenial package has to be updated with a version of rpart what was built with R 3.5 (instead of 3.4.3).
Thank you for the otherwise great work and kind regards,

how to merge distance data based on location
...852 5305
1010 1015
8500 9500
10000 13000
I want to merge based on distance, such that each row will be
deletions that overlap. So I'd like:
1003 1023 852 5305 1010 1015
5932 6120
8500 9500
12348 12689 10000 13000
Does anyone have ideas about how to accomplish this?
Thank you,

skip non-sequential lines using scan?
...e above doesn't work - it would read lines 5, 6, 7, ...
length(seq(5,99,2)) rather than 5, 7, 9, ... 99. Yes, I know I can
accomplish this by looping, but with the huge datasets I'll be working

Can anyone more familiar with SAS or SPSS think of some examples of
problems that they couldn't do in one of those packages but that could
be done easily in R? Similarly, if there are any examples of the
converse I would also be interested to know.
