username map
Hi,
I am trying to create a share for windows 98/NT users to browse without
creating unix password. I am able to join nt domain without problem. In
the usermap, I put:
nobody = *
to map everybody to nobody. But it's still asking for password. What's
the proper way to setup a browse location for windows users without the
hassle of adding each individual to the password files?
Thanks!

WinXP. Ugh. + windows 2000 and higher with WINS
...for that server, and
everything seems to work ok, but I have to manually make a record for
each one. I think setting a WINS record in the win2k DNS server will
help, but microsoft's knowledge base is down right now so I can't check.

...iguration looks like this:
NT----PPTP---NT/RAS-----RH 7/ Samba
The local configuration NT-----RH 7/ Samba works fine.
Is this related to different protocols that are used (NetBIOS, PPTP, TCP/IP)
in combination with the RAS-device?

linux 2.2.x and smbmount 2.0.5a: Win95 bugfix?
I have become quite confused about the interaction of the kernel
versions and the different versions of Samba and smbmount.
I have just upgraded to a 2.2 kernel. 'make menuconfig' gave no choice
by which to enable the Win95 bug workaround. At the same time, smbmount
2.0.5a, which seems to be the proper one for a 2.2 kernel (it's the

Linux can't telnet to WFW 3.11
My server is RH 5.2 and i use Samba 1.9.18p10 and the client use WFW 3.11 with
tcp/ip protocols installed. The subnet and the IP Address is right but I still
only telnet form WFW 3.11 to Linux...not the reverse. On Linux telnet is
working. I've checked it through this cmdline "telnet localhost 23 or telnet
127.0.0.1" . And I also testparm smb.conf and nothing wrong happen. FYI I set

newbie desperate for help
I just installed Samba for the first time. Installed and setup like a dream. Unfortunately, I can't login to save my life. The server appears in the Net. Neighborhood, but when I double-click to login, the login window give the following message:

Entering a username and password (from /etc/passwd) returns:

smbmount 2.0.6 quirks
I've noticed a couple of weird things about smbmount 2.0.6, that seem to
stem from the fact that it creates a separate process:
(1) It always immediately returns success (as from Perl system('mount -t
smbfs ...'), whatever happens later, including failure. Any way to get
a real exit status?
(2) It always dumps a bunch of what looks like debug output ('bind
succeeded' blah

Problems with odd characters in filenames on smbmounted Win95 share
I'm having problems with some Win95 files that have things like
copyright characters in the filenames. For example, when I try to copy
such a file using the name that shows up in the 'ls' listing, I get
"file not found". The funky characters get translated to underscores in
the listing.
Adding 'character set = iso8859-1' to smb.conf does *not* help.

Could Linux load average problem be related to smbfs?
This is more a "has anybody seen this?" question than anything else.
I'm using smbfs version 2.2.3a-12 on 2.4.18 kernel, Debian 3.0. The
other day, I had a problem where df got hung in D state because of smbfs
mounting a share, then the PC exposing the share rebooting. (This has
happened with smbfs across several versions). umount gave "device is
busy" errors, and I

smbfs problems in 2.0.6
I continue to have the same problems in Samba 2.0.6 with smbfs that I
was seeing in 2.0.5:
(1) After a mount (mount -t smbfs etc.), the volume is often not yet
fully mounted. For instance, if I write a Perl script like:
system('mount -t smbfs -o password=pwd //MACHINE/SHARE
/mnt/machine_share');
system('find /mnt/machine_share > find.out');
the 'find' may not find

Win95 share going in and out of df under smbfs?
Is this a known problem?
I've seen this problem both under 2.0.6 and 2.0.7, on my Debian Linux
system (kernel 2.2.14):
A Win95 share that I mounted under smbfs will show up as mounted in df,
and even contain the correct Used/Available info. If I do an 'ls' on
the mountpoint, I see no files. If I 'umount' the share, I get the 'not
mounted' error, but then no longer
