why kdm crashes
We have a pretty standard installation of CentOS 6.4 on our
workstations. We've been running into issues where kdm crashes every
once in a while when someone tries to log in on the console. The only
way to recover when it happens seems to be to restart kdm (kill -HUP
`pgrep -f /usr/bin/kdm`) (or reboot of course) and it never seems to
happen twice in a row. I am not sure where to start looking to see why

KDE login screen configuration problems
Sorry to be so slow in responding. I've done what you suggested. I created
/etc/sysconfig/desktop
and entered "$DISPLAYMANAGER=KDM". I rebooted but there was no change. GDM is still being used.
Any other suggestions?

Just create the file /etc/sysconfig/desktop and put in it:
DESKTOP=KDM
I believe it's DESKTOP - you can dbl check /etc/X11/prefdm

CentOS 6.3 - KDE login screen configuration problems
...lso
disabled the showing of the user list, and disabled logout
confirmations.
However, none of this has had any effect. The login screen remains the
same - showing the userlist and shutdown/reboot commands, and logging
out still shows the 30 second confirmation timer.
I have compared the /etc/kde/kdm/kdmrc file from the CentOS PC to my
Fedora PC and they are similar. (I make the same changes to my work PC,
and these take effect.)
Anyone any ideas about this?
Thanks,
John.

How to setup VNC for GDM access on 6.3
Hi all,
I'm looking for pointer for setting up VNC so that access to the system is via gdm/kdm. Yes, I know about vino, and /etc/sysconfig/vncservers but what I'm looking for is a sertup
that allows me to see the *dm login screen instead of being dropped direct into a desktop.
Thanks in advance

X taking 100 % cpu on Xen dom0
...0 % cpu. This is observed only when i boot up the machine with the Xen hypervisor, otherwise X works well with out the hypervisor being involved.
Is the Xen hypervisor which is acting up or is it the Nvidia drivers ? I dont see anything suspicious in dmesg or Xorg.0.log,the only error i see is from kdm in var log messages.

cve-2010-0436 patch for CentOS 5.4
Hello,
I am using a self compiled kde-3.5.10 from ftp.kde.org as a desktop
system under CentOS 5.4. Does anybody knows where to get a
cve-2010-0436 patch (kdebase, kdm) for kde-3.5.10?
Thanks!

greeter-show-remote-login on debian
Hello,
I need the possibility to login to other machines on my network. With kdm it
works by choosing "Remote Login" from a menu in the greeter. I would prefer not
to use kdm. ;-)
I saw that the option "greeter-show-remote-login" should do that for lightdm. I
work with a debian "wheezy/testing" system and installed the following packages

Installing Samba 4 on Redhat 6.
...and, if
anyone thinks they can help debug the problem.
But since Samba 3 is no longer supported, I thought it best to try and
install Samba 4. The problem is that Yum complains that Samba 3
conflicts with it. See below. And when I try to erase samba 3, it
says it has to remove kdebase and kdm and related packages. Does anyone
know a work around? Can I forcibly remove the old Samba 3 without
removing the dependencies? Thanks. - Mark

DIMM problem
Hey, folks,
I've got an HP Proliant DL580 G5 throwing ECC errors. This is annoying,
since a) it's all new as of a few months ago, and b) it's *fully*
populated. The two things I need to figure out are a) *which* DIMM it
is, and b) is it mirrored; if so, which *other* DIMM needs to come out
until we get replacements from the OEM.
Here's one of many, all identical, from dmesg:

Removable media security in FreeBSD
I'm working with a FreeBSD user -- a teacher -- who's running KDE on a system
on which she neither has nor wants root privileges. She wants to be able to
mount and unmount floppies and ZIP cartridges from within KDE, using the
standard KwikDisk utility (which, by the way, generates mount and unmount
command that don't conform to FreeBSD syntax; however, it appears possible
to fix this

/etc/ttys oddity
I have the following line in /etc/ttys:
ttyv8 "/usr/local/bin/kdm -nodaemon" xterm on insecure
Because of X misconfiguration it constantly crashed, so:
kdm-bin[1178]: Unable to fire up local display :0; disabling.
So I fix xorg.conf, then I change on => off in ttys,
then I do kill -1 1, and X gets started!
Seems illogical. Or maybe kdm-bin does som...
