centos-announce list?
Any chance we can set up a low-volume "centos-announce" list so that we
all don't have to read all of these non-Centos-specific E-mail threads
about people figuring out how to admin a Linux box when all we need to
know is when major releases/milestones/news items are available?

Xen network problem
I have a machine with 8 CPU's (2 quad xeons). (Centos 5.4 currently).
Currently, I am running 2 domUs. One with 4 CPUs and another with 2. 2
remain unused. I am using routed networking.
On the one machine with 4 CPU's, there is a cronjob at 4am which
utilizes the CPU/disk pretty heavily. It is rebuilds a mailing list
archive (using MHonarc) and rebuilds a search engine index

Centos 4
Has anyone done an upgrade from RHEL3 to RHEL4? Is this likely to break
a lot of things? How long will Centos be supporting version 3? I just
installed Centos 3.4 two weeks ago!
The only problem I'm having with Centos is that the perl is a bit old. I
have errors with spamassassin. So far bugzilla for spamassasin is
blaming it on the version of perl included in RHEL3 and bugs in the

net domain join fails - classic DC
I've got a rather old setup for several computers and VM's here at home.
It is fairly static--the other day I was decided to remove and then
re-add one of my Linux servers to the domain. My setups it the old
smbldap and openldap setup. Centos 7 recently updated to 4.6.2.
When I tried to join a Linux machine named 'backup' I got an error:
Failed to join domain: Failed to set

Cannot reach documentation site
doc.dovecot.org does not have a DNS entry. It worked a few days ago, but

How do I configure Multiple domains/machines?
I''m running Centos 5.1. In order to do some software testing, I want to
run about 100 virtual machines. I tried doing this on a single box but
at around 30-40 I start getting issues with xen such as hotplug not
responding or xen_net memory squeeze issues. So, taking another route...
I would like to install 3 physical machines with Xen. I would like all
of the domU''s from the

Samba 3 PDC > 3.3.4 broken with Win 7 RTM
I just installed Win 7 RTM (Release to Manufacturing), not RC nor Beta.
After searching the archives I modified the required registry settings
listed in other emails. I upgraded my Samba from the stock Centos 5.3
version to 3.3.7. Joining the domain worked, but I was unable to log in.
I would get a 'Trust relationship denied' type error when trying to log
in as a user of the domain.

Xen networking - pulling out my hair
I just cant get a Centos 5.1 domU to install under Centos 5.1 dom0. It
is maddening! I'm trying to replace a single server that currently uses
simple ethernet aliases (eth0:0, eth0:1, etc) with a new server that
uses Xen virtualization.
Maybe I dont understand bridging properly or something.
My dom0 has the following:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:00:44:11:22:33

Loss of DHCP destroys bridge
I am having trouble with recovery. Today due to electrical work I
powered down my networks Router / DHCP server.
My Centos 7 host machines lost their DHCP lease (they are actually
static leases). Once I power my Router / DHCP server back up none of my
virtual machine were accessible. It appears that when the DHCP lease was
lost on the virt server the bridge of the KVM guest were all losts. A

Xen domU default gateway missing/ARP table full
I have been trying to figure out why my domU NIC becomes unreachable
(could not even ping) at various times. (Normally when the server was
trying to update clamav from the various busy mirrors at 4am). There
also seemed to be some latency when connecting which I chalked up to it
being a virtual machine.
When I checked my logs, I found thousands of :

Centos 5.5 KVM GRUB / Virtio issue
I have a virtual machine that had been running fine using a RAW disk
image (IDE).
I am in the process of converting this virtual machine to use a single
LVM and virtio. (For LVM backup snapshots and easy resizing purposes (no
LVM within the guest))
I create the LVM and copied all the files from the existing RAW image to
an ext3 under the LVM.
However, I cannot get it to boot. It has to do

On my Linux installs, I allow for a 'local' account with user id 1000.
That is the only local account and is used for installing the OS (or in
case AD is down). All other user/group accounts are

cifsacl not working
I installed a new Ubuntu 20.4 LTS system (smbd 4.11.6) . Initially I
tried using the SSSD and 'realm' to join the domain. Everything worked
similar to my Centos 7 install and I thought I was finished.
The one thing not working is? cifs shares showing the proper id mapping.
Based on some online posts, including from Rowland, I got rid of SSSD
and configured samba/winbind only. Lots of
