Best Linux distibution for ruby on rails developement?
Hi, I am on Kanotix linux since the first distribution was released by Kano. However I am tired of the "if it can go wrong it will go wrong on Kanotix" pattern. Please recommend a distribution that by your experience is best for ruby on rails development and need no hour-long tweacks for even "simple...

Samba 3.0.23c-1 breaks my home network
Samba 3.0.23 on debian breaks my eMac connection. I have a debian box and an eMac. I posted to my debian distro (Kanotix) and got this info: "Samba upstream has dropped a previously valid config option with their latest version and made every use of it throw an error. "passdb backend" supports only one argument anymore in /etc/samba/smb.conf. passdb backend = tdbsam (perhaps you were using "pas...

annoying warnings in ESS/Emacs
Hi, I'm not sure if this is an R problem, a Debian problem, a GNU Emacs problem or an ESS problem. I get the following warning the first time I call help on a command in a session, for example: > ?sessionInfo Warning message: use of NULL environment is deprecated This only occurs in GNU Emacs, not when running R from bash, and not with Xemacs. It started happening when I updated R

Problem with smbmount
...can create a file, and it is automaticllay given to root (according to the option "force user"), but I can't make any write where the user "root" is the owner of the directory. It works well under Windows XP workstation, it does not works under linux workstation (which is a Kanotix/Knoppix/Debian distribution), that's why I think it's a problem with smbmount/mount -t smbfs Any idea ? Printing - using WINE
...necessary. I tried several applications, and a print-form appeared. It showed my LINUX-Printer with its name. But I could never open the properties-form; in one case the application quit, when I fixed the portrait-format. I wasn't told, what was missing. I use WINE 0.9.7 and WINETOOLS 0.9 with KANOTIX 2005-4. My beloved printer is the hp 600. Greetings from Wuppertal, Klabauter

Bryce 5.5 once ran, before update.
...cording to which Bryce 5.5 does not run under WINE. But not having looked at the AppDB first, I went ahead and installed Bryce 5.5 some months ago, which ran fine under WINE 0.9.44 or some such version... Here is an old screenshot of the app, which has been used to render a tree on the Linux Box. (Kanotix 2006-RC4) [Image: http://www.dirkmittler.com/Bryce_WINE.jpg ] But since I've upgraded to a newer version of WINE, the startup behaviour of Bryce has become, to paint the screen, but then to let most of the GUI turn black. Bryce is one application, which will use windows that have no visible b...

'wine explorer' just exits with no messages.
I found this error to be a bit odd. I had completely wiped my hard drive before reinstalling everything (for reasons unrelated to WINE,) on my Kanotix 2007 RC6 Thormammer. But now I've reinstalled WINE RC1. Since WINE v0.9.61 came out, I've noticed that 'wine explorer' just quits without any error messages. Also, the corresponding menu entry does the same thing. Since this is a clean install, what could I be doing wrong? Dirk

Unable to access Debian repository.
Yesterday evening, I became unable to access http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/ . This has firstly become inaccessible to me for the purpose of finding out from the Web pages, whether version 0.9.59 has been adapted as binaries for Debian yet, which I personally need as a user of Kanotix, because the whole index can't be called up. But in addition right now, an 'apt-get update' fails to complete, because this program is also unable to access your server. Further, the problem did not clear itself overnight. Yet, 'apt-get update' does report what the correct IP...

0.9.60 Still doesn't do Bryce 5.5 correctly.
Just a few weeks ago, I reported a regression according to which Bryce 5.5 would at least display its application window correctly, until WINE v0.9.56 came along. Next, I posted here hoping that WINE developers would at least test Bryce themselves, to try working on this bug. And to that end, I had given a URL here, from which the application can be downloaded for free. It was due to my own

Can't get if_txp(4) to attach to a 3CR990B-TXM NIC
...e, but C is pretty much Greek to me. Everything I've read online says this NIC should work, and other are using it successfully. My gut feeling is that it's something to do with the motherboard chipset and the way it detects the NIC. But I could be way off. (As a test, I popped in a Kanotix LiveCD and the 3Com NIC is detected and usable, so it's [hopefully] not a defective NIC.) Anyone have any suggestions? Comments? Methods to destroy the NIC as an act of defiance? :) -- Freddie Cash, LPIC-2 CCNT CCLP Network Support Technician School District 73 (25...
