"Decent" sub-$100 SIP phone.
Hey, all. I quoted a customer about $100 for some cheap SIP phones. I was planning on using the BT-102's, but he called said they look like "Princess phones," and I have to admit that he has a point. Some of the other inexpensive phones look decent, but (for example) the SPA-841's wiki entry says the remote end gets a lot of static. Since it'll be being used from a noisy

How do i translate the old default_mail_env setting?
Hi, First, I am new to dovecot. Before my Jan '08 meltdown, sendmail was sufficient. A friend set up dovecot and since things just-worked, I was happy with that. Now I have a new mailserver and what was installed nearly two years ago fails. My pal installed things in dovecot.conf this way: default_mail_env = maildir:~/Maildir but the new mail environment is too different to be

kern.randompid: jot generation senseful?
hi, is a random pid generation really a security enhancement? if yes, would it make sense to setup something like: --> sysctl kern.randompid=`jot -r 1 500 2000` in cron to be executed every X mins/hrs? and finally, what are the recommended minimum (security) and maximum (performance) values for kern.randompid?

is there a script to find a message from a given username easily?
Hello people, I used primarily mutt and sendmail for many years. (And elm before mutt.) All my mail was saved into ~/Mail. Messages from, say, smith at foo.ber were stored in ~/Mail/smith; all mail from smith was catenated into one file, and if I wanted to find something that smith had written, I would just cd to ~/Mail and grep or egrep on a likely word or phrase. Is there a script

unit testing with model inheritence
Having jotted down some models, with some inheritence I tried to run some unit tests. After waiting for rake test_units to run I got a rake of errors (if you''ll forgive the play on words). The errors were to do with unknown tables in the tear down stage. The unknown tables corresponded to sub-types wher...

Receptionist GUI?
Hey, all. Just wondering if there's a GUI out there -- preferably OSS, but I'll take what-have-you -- that a) can run on an Ubuntu/Debian box, and b) allows a receptionist to see what calls are in-process, and forward calls from their phone to somewhere else. Thanks! -Ken -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

Comdial PBX -- can use Asterisk as VM box?
Hi! I've got a Comdial PBX that I would dearly love to replace with an Asterisk box. However, for various reasons, it appears not to be in the cards. Regardless of what management does, or does not, want, our current VM solution -- some Dialogic card with a "KeyVoice" application -- is dying. I'm 90% sure it's hardware. I'd rather shoot myself than replace the

Polycom firmware: split vs. combined
http://downloads.polycom.com/voice/voip/sip_sw_releases_matrix.html Howdy, all. What's the difference between "split" and "combined" firmware, which can be seen at the above link? I've googled to no avail, I'm afraid. Thanks! -Ken -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

Samba for AD client?
Hey, all. I'm planning on migrating a W2K3 server to a Linux solution. It needs to be AD-aware, support ACLs, etc. This isn't something I'm doing Right Now(tm), so I can wait a little bit. A couple questions: 1) Are there any known issues with BTRFS? 2) Which version of Samba would be most appropriate for this? 3) AD integration: I've never really done it (with success); any

Just a question on how things are going
Hi Jean-Marc, I was just wondering if maybe you would consider a "blog-like" text file in the codebase where you just jot down your thoughts about why you are making a change, and where you think you are headed. For example, I noticed today that you completely removed the pitch prediction code. It would be nice to know if you did that because you're moving away from using it as

Redhat Linux 7 on a Win Nt Network
Hi, my name is Scott. I am currently testing Linux for my company -we want to see if we can have Linux workstation(s) on our Microsoft network. I'm new to Linux and have so far managed to: install redhat linux 7 on a Compaq PC (intel III) token ring machine and configure the gateway to access the internet (through Netscape). Now, I need to see if I can get this machine talking on the

Your "favorite" Asterisk application.
Hi, all. I've done some Asterisk recelling, but recently got roped into a Sr. SysAdmin position. Our PBX is c. 1823, and -- well, as pretty much all circuit-based systems do, it sucks. It sucks to administer, moves suck... you know the drill. So, I'd love change to an Asterisk system. My boss, who loves to spend money for no particular reason, wants to go proprietary, though. So
