Wine 20050111 jeopardizes X on start
Hi, after upgrading to 20050111 I get this behaviour: X goes blank, monitor goes standby. After switching to console and back to X everything is fine and the wine app is running normally. I tried downgrading to the previous version (August 2004 or so) to find this behaviour stays. So I guess starting the 2005 built garbled some config entry which stayed in ~/.wine/config Any idea what to

...and wants to link all the computers in the house, so "he can back them up daily."? I read the About info on your website, but still have a few questions: 1. I work online, can Samba capture any information (passwords, screen shots, personal information, administrative log on) that might jeopardize my job's security? 2. Can personal emails be tracked and passwords captured? 3. Can live chat be captured? 4. Can personal email addresses be opened using Samba? Thank you, Lucy ?

Deleted objects keep coming back
...ded these workspaces, and the old objects which I'd deleted had come back again. This is really annoying and I feel like I'm losing my mind! I'm concerned that R is not accessing the directory properly, and may be reading one workspace file in place of another. This would completely jeopardize my work. Please help! Thanks in advance, Ken

new install on Centos 7
...for reason out of their control, they can't update because it would/could break something else. > There are downsides to compiling yourself. To be sure. (Incidentally, auto-updates are sometimes *not* what people want -- stability of a working system is paramount over anything that might jeopardize that.) Compiling from source is not everybody's cup of tea, but it does allow complete control over the build. Repo-packages usually are built with kitchen-sink options, which may not suit everyone. Intrusion Suspected, Advice Sought
...so, that person was very skillful in getting in and only left small traces of poking around. I assume your advice will be to do a clean re-install of both system and programs. My question is how do I re-import the data from full backup (probably also containing whatever it is) without further jeopardizing my system? Any other advice, tips, or pointers to FreeBSD programs I could run on Mac would be greatly appreciated. John Scherb

[RFC PATCH] virtio_ring: Use DMA API if guest memory is encrypted
...tion in Documentation/vfio.txt) has extra ioctls to program the IOMMU. For our use case, we don't need address translation because we set up an identity mapping in the IOMMU so that the device can use guest physical addresses. If the guest kernel is concerned that an unprivileged driver could jeopardize its integrity it should not negotiate this feature flag. Perhaps there should be a note about this in the flag definition? This concern is platform-dependant though. I don't believe it's an issue in pseries. -- Thiago Jung Bauermann IBM Linux Technology Center

db connection issues in production but not in dev mode
We have an application Ruby on rails, which fires a number of queries to the database. I Suspect it is connection timeout error or something When we run the application in development mode, it works as expected. However when we switch to Production mode, we get the following error in Postgre console: -------------------------- LOG: could not receive data from client: No connection could be made

Authenticating users from proprietary user databases
...bvious, it has a very severe drawback I'm not sure how to tackle, and that's the fact that nsswitch modules are system global. I don't want our hosts' Linux users (root, nobody, daemon, etc) to collide with the appliance's users and vice versa, and I'd definitely not want to jeopardize the stability of core Linux services in any way by adding something as complex as looking up our clustered database for users from within all processes in the system. I'm not sure how to further handle this. Should I patch OpenSSH itself (oh god, please, no...)? Should I use some dynamic LD...

how to prevent files and directories from being deleted?
...Of course, most people refuse to listen to logic and reason because they are convinced they are right despite evidence (and best practices over 40+ years of Unix) to the contrary. I'll end this by saying, I hope the production servers you have don't provide critical services that could jeopardize the lives of people.? I'd ask who you work for, to make sure I avoid them at all costs, but I'm not sure I'd be told. Again, denying 40+ years of Unix design and? best practices because you're too lazy to manage compiling from source to avoid denying those practices is truly...
